| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | May 17, 2005 Pours deep ruby color. Smells sweet and chocolatey. Taste is slightly salty almost... Decent malty sweet taste with some hints of fruit (definitely raisins) and undercut with a nice hoppy feel. A decent beer. noelcb (271), Toledo, Ohio, USA
| 4.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 10/10 | 5/5 | 10/10 | 4/5 | 20/20 | May 13, 2005 Nice chestnut red-brown, poured a massive foamy tan head which faded slowly to a skim and 2 fingers of lace. Aromas of butterscotch, apple, banana, brown sugar, raisins, citrus and coffee. Taste was fruity and sweet, with notes of butterscotch, treacle, raisins and dark roast malt. Big Golding hop bitterness -- lingers blythely on the tongue and quietly departs. Good mouthfeel -- starts heavy but leaves no pasty feel behind. Nice moderate carbonation and modestly high ABV gave good "have another" drinkability. I enjoyed this good strong example of an EBA. ALLOVATE (1126), Perth, Australia
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | May 13, 2005 Mr. Paul Theakston surely pulled it all together for this absolute gem of a beer, and as far as pasteurised bottled Ales go, it was one of the most flavoursome and appetising. Pours a clear, deep cola brown, ruby-red in the lights, with a big dense beige head that lasted the distance and laced well down the glass. Generous and complex malt nose. Coffee, aniseed, dark chocolate, bittering hops and cherries, and a waft of peppered spice made the aroma. Follows well into the mouth, with it’s light carbonation and medium light, creamy mouth feel. Flavours of raspberries, cherries, cinnamon and light spices mingle with hints of cocoa powder, liquorice, grassy hops and fruity esters. Little sweetness in it, and quite malty bitter in the back, it finishes with a long lived, malt and coffee swallow. A lovely drop and a credit to this master brewer. Lovely!!! scotty (834), Scotland
| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | May 12, 2005 Bottle Morrisons, dark red brown, good light brown head that lasts well. Aroma is rich and malty, almost treacley, fruity hops very much in the back ground. A big complex malty flavour without being overly sweet balanced with good robust hops...super beer, but not one for a session. hammenlind (738), Sundbyberg, Sweden

| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Apr 28, 2005 Dark red color with a big tan head. Aroma of dark fruit and caramel. Flavor of malt, smoke, coffee and sour fruit. Seemed thin for the style. bbrock81 (221), Le Mars, Iowa, USA
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Apr 14, 2005 Bottled. Aroma was lightly of roasted malt, a little dark fruit (I’m thinking figs) and a little banana. Appearance was a dark, almost opaque brown. The flavor was lightly roasted like the aroma, with a fair malt and hop balance. Nothing really prominent in the flavor, though, and tasted a little watery. The palate was likewise a little watery. Overall it was just an OK beer.
