The nose is toasty with lots of coca and nutty notes, some dry cocoa and chocolate. The flavor is dry and robust with a moderate dark toast and coffee notes. Dry and a moderate body, sweet licoricey finish. Decent brown ale, but feels a bit more like a porter or a schwarzbier. troyc (1175), Lubbock, Texas, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Jun 21, 2007 (Bottle) Pours a dark brown color with an average tan head. Smooth malty aroma of chocolate and roasted caramel. Taste includes some vanilla, light coffee and hazelnut as well. The best part about it is that it’s not too sweet, like many other beers with vanilla and hazelnut notes. Average palate, but a surprisingly good beer overall. gmcase (113), Indiana, USA
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Jun 18, 2007 Bottle. pours almost black nice caramel head. taste typical of the genre with maybe a little more pronouced nuttyness in the finish than most. The thing about this beer is the value. Five bucks for a six pack and you can’t beat it. By the way its companion beer the "stockyard oatmeal stout" is not nearly as good. hayduke (1659), Eureka, California, USA

Nose of roasted malts and chocolate. Mouthfeel smooth. Flavor of caramel, chocolate, and toffee. A little nuts in the finish. From Trader Joe’s and a good value. Nice brown. | 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Jun 12, 2007 The aroma was lightly roasty with a bit of a smoky nature. The aroma was nutty and malty with caramel and chocolate. Munich malt seemed to carry the load. In the glass the beer was dark brown with a ruby highlight when held to light. The head was off-white and low and laced slightly at the glass. The flavor was very nice with a strong nutty presence and a chocolate and light coffee character. A bit of smoke was notable, as was some caramel malt, but the beer was never sweet and well balanced. The finish was dry with light lasting chocolate and roast into the aftertaste. The body was medium and the carbonation level was moderate. A nice brown ale, very easy to consume. 12 ounce bottle. kgoldsbe (3), Denver, Colorado, USA does not count | 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 13/20 | Jun 11, 2007 Light in texture, dark in color, and nutty in flavor. Great beer for the money! Sold at Trader Joes. Bockyhorsey (2551), Mesa, Arizona, USA

Flavor had some roast to it but was well carbinated otherwise this would of been blah. Interesting brew. alexanderj (2269), Chino Hills, California, USA

Poured a dark brown, with a smallish light brown head. Aroma of coffee, roasted malt, some chocolate; Flavor was much of the same, but with a nuttiness that reminded me of cracker jacks. Mellow, easy drinking and above average for the style.
