Aroma is more like a stout or porter. Mainly roast with coffee, but also some chocolate in there. The typical nutty aroma for a brown ale is minimal. Flavor is nutty with caramel and a hint of coffee. Finishes fairly bitter. For a $5 6 pack this beer won. It’s kinda funny seeing some other reviews and that some people think this was a schwartz or a porter. Given the name of the beer and it’s aroma I’m not surprised. | 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 4/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Jun 7, 2005 Poured a light brown with some ruby highlights, average tan head - very bubbly, little lacing. Smelled somewhat skunky. Flavor seemed too light, somewhat nutty, smooth middle, with only mild hops at finish. Drinkable, but not great. richlikebeer (832), Easton, Pennsylvania, USA
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Jun 6, 2005 bottle passed along from the inestimable lou18, sweet malty aroma, not that strong, dark brown, watery looking body, slight tan head., nice roasty flavor, some caramel, a little bit of toast, little bit of nuts, slight bits of chocolate in the tail. very smooth, if thin body, this makes me think of a thinned out schwarzbier or dopplebock. a very nice easy to drink brew, that could easily be one of my everyday drinkers. bb (2941), Martinez, California, USA

Roasty flavor that’s not at all overpowering, along with some malt, caramel, and nuttiness. Very drinkable. ahole (38), Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA

Easy to drink....very quenching....mild, and no skunky flavor. Good stuff. SDalkoholic (1198), Chula Vista, California, USA
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | May 15, 2005 Chestnut and brown sugar aroma. Fluffy layer of head and dark leather brown. Flavor is brown ale but has a resemblance to a toned down porter to my tastebuds. A tad bit bitter with a decaff coffee taste and hint of roasted malt and sugar. | 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | May 15, 2005 Surprisingly decent Brown...with strong roasted malt aroma, nice rich brown pour, lightly carbonated mouthfeel, roasted malt sweetness, caramel and toffee notes, and a bit of a bite at the end (just a "bit"). Mouthfeel seems a little thin. I agree with SDalkoholic, in a blind taste test, I could see myself calling this one a "toned-down porter". All things considered, a pretty drinkable (and inexpensive, for a change) beer.
