Commercial Description:
It's that time of year again - the barley to the maltings, the hops to the oasthouse. To celebrate, we've put plenty of both in this rich, robust ale. In days past, laborers returning home from the fields would've looked forward to a "restorative" such as this to lift their spirits after a hard day's work. This year our Harvest Ale features the "Horizon" hop variety, malt complexity, and the color of autumn. O.G.-1.069 IBU's - 40

On tap into shaker at the brewpub. Deep ruby clear in the glass with only a dusting of tan head. Nice malty smell, with a little bit of bright fruits and maple poking through the general breadiness. Malt profile is definitely forward and insistent and nicely complex, in that different malt flavorings take center stage at different times. Sugary and grinding grains at first (with maybe a little DME) aren’t the best, but subside with the carbonation into some dark grains, cranberry (without the tartness), and maybe a little licorice. The finish: much like the aftertaste of cranberry juice (the echo of tartness that, in this case, wasn’t there to begin with), with some earthy rhubarb bitterness on the back sides of the tongue making it a little dry; long. In theory, I like the cranberry aspects, and with the right food accompaniment, they might be very nice. Their near acridity, along with some of the untutored sugars, leaves this feeling just a little off, eventhough I can’t pin down exactly why.

Draft at the brewpub. A nice rich aroma of sweet fragrant hops. Very nice, sweet with a bold hop body to it. Good balance with both the malt and hops getting to show off a little bit. Nice crisp feel, on this appealing reddish orange brew. Reminded me a little bit of Nosferatu.

This pours rich and dark brown with a thin head as expected from a cask. Malty aroma with a subtle hop aroma. Well balanced, slightly sweet but not without a smooth hops finish. The cask does this brew well. Smooth and filling.
