Commercial Description:
This beer is not named after an obscure character in a Dickens novel. It is instead the beer equivalent of a varietal wine: Maris Otter is considered by many brewers to be the finest of all English Barleys, and is reserved for "top of the line" pale ales, where its low tannin and protein content make for a clean flavor combined with a smooth finish. The hops are Willamette. (o.g. 1.054 IBUs 32)

(On tap) Cask conditioned. Amber coloured with an off-white head. Malty nose with an edge of caramel. Medium body with some caramel malt and some fantastic fresh and fruity aroma hops. A bit low in carbonation. Lovely. Served as an extra by the friendly waiter. 300306

Draft sample at Knoxville Brew Jam. Poured a clear dark amber color with an average frothy white head that mostly lasted with good lacing. Moderate earthy sour citrus hoppy aroma. Medium body. Medium bittersweet flavor with a medium bitter finish of moderate duration. Flavorful pale ale.

Cask handpull at brewpub: Clean golden hue with a small frothy head and very good lace. The aroma has notes of grassy noble hops, some apple and mango esters, biscuity malt, hint of caramel, and some pepper vapours. The taste is a balanced mild bitterness, fruity and dry grainy background. A touch medicinal but not too bad. The mouth feel is soft and chalky, thin and refreshing enough. A very quaffable session beer, I liked it. The should be listed as an ESB methinks.

Draft 5 oz sample at the brewpub, 5/14/06: Golden orange with a thin veil. Crisp tartness in the bitterness. Nice exceptionally clean beer with no huskiness to a great malt basis. Very pleasant hoppy beer.

Bottle poured a lightly hazy gold with a minimal lingering ring of amber foam. Aromas of carmel, vanilla and a hint of spice. Palate was light bodied and smooth. Flavors of bread, light straw and a hint of spice with a smooth moderatly bitter finish.

Copper, nice beige head. Mild aroma, maybe a bit fruity with some earthy notes. Flavor is more fruity than the aroma. Cleanaand crisp at first, then slightly sweet. Flinty finish. At the 2007 Knoxville Brewer’s Jam.

Tawny, thin lacing, clear despite not being filtered. Sweeetish, yeasty, slightly uric aroma. Sweet at first, then it dries out and becomes biscuity. Finishes a bit salty. An interesting brew. Claims 32 IBU, but it’s smooth and not bitter. Quite good.
