durhambeer (1187), Durham, USA Oct 4, 2009 Bottle sampled at Durham World Beer Festival. Pours slightly hazy dark amber, closer to brown. Small off-white head. Not overly spicy for winter beer. Toffee and mild fruits come through, but mostly caramel malt. I’d drink this again. dkachur (2317), Charlottesville, Virginia, USA Apr 27, 2009 12 ounce bottle from Greenlife Grocery in Asheville, NC. Pours a clear ruby red color with a medium mottled tan head. Decent retention and lacing. Aroma is toffee, raisin, muted vegetal hops. Taste is caramel, toffee, citrus hops. Medium bodied, Barrios (852), Nashville, Tennessee, USA Apr 12, 2009 Thanks Butters. Bottle pours an off-white head with and amber body. Aroma is caramel and some fruit. Flavor is sweet bread. Finish is caramel with an interesting bitterness. tronraner (1906), Maryville, Tennessee, USA Feb 4, 2009 12 oz bottle. Pours hazy dark orange with thin beige head. The aroma is strong tangerine with some caramel and toffee and a few light spicy notes. The flavor is toffee, cinnamon, some interesting fruity hops, and notes of raisin and anise. The finish is woody with a slight earthy touch and some clove notes. The warmer my glass gets, the more pronounced the spices become, with some nutmeg and allspice popping up. Dunno if the other guys had a bad bottle or what, but I’m enjoying this one. BeerHawk (1175), Huntsville, Alabama, USA Jan 27, 2009 Bottle shared by Butters @ the Barrios tasting. Poured a hazy brown with an off-white head that left light lace. Lots of alcohol in the aroma but also caramel, and a light fruit and spice background. The flavor had caramel and a hop background but also a sweetness to it almost like candy corn. Medium body, sweet throughout, and a light spiced ending. nqualls (1429), Nashville, Tennessee, USA Jan 25, 2009 12 oz bottle courtesy of Butters for the Barrios Nashville tasting. Poured a hazy orange/amber color with a thin off white head. The aroma was alcohol combined with caramel and molasses. The flavor was coriander and a cardboard note, with a lingering bitter finish. The palate was average with a clean mouthfeel, medium body and a bit too much carbonation for this type of beer. I wasn’t overly impressed with this beer. illinismitty (1790), Nashville, Tennessee, USA Jan 25, 2009 Bottle from Butters at Bario’s tasting. Pours deep amber with a beige head. Light to medium bodied. Aroma is mainly alcohol with some grains hiding in the back. Flavor of caramel and spices, but with a "cheap beer" quality to it. I don’t care too much for the finish, which has some astringency and perhaps some acetaldehyde. Needs some work to get my interest. Butters (1622), Virginia, USA Jan 24, 2009 Bottle at Barrios’ Impromptu Tasting to pop Smitty’s Surly. Pours a clear amber with small ring of wispy white head. Nose of fusel alcohol esters. Flavors of malt, licorice root, corn, vegetal. Nothing really good here, but not absolutely horrible.
