Pours a dark brown with a solid off-white head and nice lacing. A bit of raisiny overtone creeps in alongside a resiny whack of aroma hops. Malty, but not sweet backing provides an excellent canvas upon which this beer paints a hoppy winter treat. Nutmeg plays a small part but is understated. tronraner (1939), Seymour, Tennessee, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Feb 4, 2009 12 oz bottle. Pours hazy dark orange with thin beige head. The aroma is strong tangerine with some caramel and toffee and a few light spicy notes. The flavor is toffee, cinnamon, some interesting fruity hops, and notes of raisin and anise. The finish is woody with a slight earthy touch and some clove notes. The warmer my glass gets, the more pronounced the spices become, with some nutmeg and allspice popping up. Dunno if the other guys had a bad bottle or what, but I’m enjoying this one. NachlamSie (1654), Tennessee, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Dec 19, 2008 12 oz. bottle. Pours a dark, cloudy red without real head retention. The nose is spiced with hints at cinnamon and clove. A slight Belgian feel is imparted here. Sweet fruits are also noted. The mouthfeel is medium. The flavor brings out more noticeable spices. It could be the work of esters, but these hints at nutmeg and cinnamon seem real. A fruity sweetness weaves in and out of the spiced notes and finally a semi-dry finish ensues. This really is not too bad at all. durhambeer (1233), Durham, USA
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Oct 4, 2009 Bottle sampled at Durham World Beer Festival. Pours slightly hazy dark amber, closer to brown. Small off-white head. Not overly spicy for winter beer. Toffee and mild fruits come through, but mostly caramel malt. I’d drink this again. mhelgason (495), Charlotte, North Carolina, USA

First impression was that the beer had a nice brown sugar based malty backbone with some nice hops present. By the end the beer was less pleasing...the spices and the hops became more present (not sure why these [which are typically pleasant] did not do it for me in this one). ucusty (1920), Wake Forest, North Carolina, USA

| 2.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 9/20 | Jan 25, 2009 Bottle from Butters at Bario’s tasting. Pours deep amber with a beige head. Light to medium bodied. Aroma is mainly alcohol with some grains hiding in the back. Flavor of caramel and spices, but with a "cheap beer" quality to it. I don’t care too much for the finish, which has some astringency and perhaps some acetaldehyde. Needs some work to get my interest.
