Commercial Description:
A smooth, well-balanced ale brewed with pure water, malts, hops, and yeast and then cold conditioned in the tradition of a classic German Altbier. The drinkable nature of this beer and the roasted chocolate and coffee notes present in this beer make it a wonderfully warming beer. A subtle malt sweetness, distinctive German hops aroma and taste, and subtle roasted finish make this one of our favorite styles of beer.

Bottle: Nice aroma. Very malty with lots of chocolate and toffee. Real reddish-brown with a small off-white head that is short lasting. Very sweet up front. Finishes with lots of chocolate and toffee just like the aroma but also some roastiness. The initial sweetness slowly changes to a tartness in the finish.

Nothing exceptional. Pours dark amber with a fleeting beige head. Nose has smoke, soy sauce, anise. Light bodied. Flavor was interesting. Unusual, perhaps, is better. Complex yet not special.

Dark copper color with zilch head. Aroma was pretty dull with nothing really noticeable but a trace of smoke. Little bits of hops and malt in the taste. How is this an alt? It tastes like... nothing.

Poured from the bottle at Chocolate Moose, Ely, Minnesota - great place. Dark copper color, decent sized off-white head; good thick lacing. Flavor has elements of dates and raisins with just enough hop bitterness to keep it balanced and interesting. Aroma has elements of caramel and toffee. Damn good alt.

12 oz bottle. Extremely dark, translucent cola brown. Small lasting tan head. Big earthy acerbic aroma: black licorice, dark chocolate, roasted nuts, yummy. Delightful body, rich and full, with light carbonation apparent mostly near the finish. Chocolate, nuts, toasted grain, with a strong coffee ground finishing bitterness. Excellent.

2004 bottle. Light fiery red color, decent beige colored head. Very clear. Not much of a smell, a bit of caramel and barley, maybe a touch of hops. Flavor is quite dry, grains, and a bit of caramel malt. Hops are mildly sharp on the finish. Tastes like mineral water and body is medium-light with a firm carbonation. No real complexity. I’m not seein the smoked malts, nor does the brewer mention them. This just tastes like an average amber ale.
