Commercial Description:
Blue Point Brewing's "Old Howling Bastard" named after an infamous local character, this strong ale has plenty of character all its own. Made with English 2 row barley and Vienna malt. Reaching an alcohol content of 10% barleywine should be consumed in moderation. Strong malty caramel flavors balanced by lots and lots of hops. Try this in a snifter or wineglass. The trick is to never forget that after a few glasses you may become the "Old Howling Bastard"

Very thick and sweet. A lit of dark fruits and some roast. Some bitterness too. Molasses and caramel dominate with the figs and some doughyness.

On tap, Eli Cannon’s. Pours clear orange with a small head. Aroma is sweet of bubble gum, copper and malt. Flavor, unfortunately, is kind of a mess: there is that bubble gum sweetness, some candy peach, roasts, ash, and finishing hop bitterness. All accentuated by alcohol. For me, this beer is flavorful but unbalanced. Its flavors dart all over the place, and the alcohol shows a bit too offensively.

Bottle at Cole’s in Buffalo, NY. Pours unclear orange brown with a thin beige head. Sweet crystal malt aroma with light hoppy notes. The flavor is well balanced with sweet caramel malt and some floral, almost spicy, hops. Pretty good.

An amber barley wine with a thin white head. A rather musty vinous aroma wit treacle, light floral hops, very perfumey. In mouth, a viscous pungent floral hops, with caramel base, light licorice, very pleasant. Flour City brewfest, August 15 2008.
