Commercial Description:
Blue Point Brewing's "Old Howling Bastard" named after an infamous local character, this strong ale has plenty of character all its own. Made with English 2 row barley and Vienna malt. Reaching an alcohol content of 10% barleywine should be consumed in moderation. Strong malty caramel flavors balanced by lots and lots of hops. Try this in a snifter or wineglass. The trick is to never forget that after a few glasses you may become the "Old Howling Bastard"

On tap at Blue Point... This beer made no effort to cover the alcohol taste and was simply not that enjoyable.

At the brewery on tap. Looks good, smells good with a fruity sweet aroma. However, the flavor just kind of drops you into fuel notes. Starts with a generic mixed fruit candy flavor but dissolves too quickly to mask the alcohol.

(750ml bottle, 2003 vintage) Pours a cloudy deep amber body with a medium beige head. Aroma of toasted bread, fruit, peat, and caramel. Flavor of hops, caramel, some fruit, maple syrup, and breadiness.

Dark burnt orange appearance, big lightly tan head. Aroma of strong hops (pine and grapefruit), powdered sugar, waffles, and a bit of brown sugar too. Flavor of brown sugar, caramel, bitter hop flavor, piny and earthy. Full body, medium carbonation, creamy. Nicely done, but it’s really just another hoppy barley wine. Worth a try.

Courtesy boboski. 2003. Hazy orange/copper topped by 1cm of dense yellowish/off white head. Flavor and aroma big caramel malt, generic lighter fruits, lightly zesty yeast with some subtle gamey meat. Small shot of alcohol in the finish. Very full body with balanced carbonation, lightly viscous. Drinking pretty good for 3.5 to 4 years old.

2003. The orange and golden body has thick haze swirling within, eventually settling a little. Pretty off-white lacing is imparted by a thick and slowly receding tan head. A strange color combination, but a healthy appearance. Aroma is buttery toasted grains, euphorically sweet caramel, raisins, fruity yeast with a tangerine skin twang, toffee, smoke and dried flowers. Hops have served their purpose as an integral preservative and provide bittered fruit rind nuances. Alcohol is mild and well integrated/masked at the four year mark. No offensive signs of aging; this has held up well during its long stint on the shelf. The flavor is lightly bitter, medium sweet and showcases a plethora of fruit notes. Caramel is still the dominant trait, raisins and yeastiness following in strong succession. Wood notes seep through but don’t effect flavor much. This is very tasty, very quaffable. The finish is smooth and sweet, then very dry. Mouthfeel is full bodied and slick with ample carbonation, an amount which is surprising given the age of the beer. A good beer, nothing more, nothing less.

2003 vintage shared by the Orlando crew! The beer pours to a nice hazy glowing orange/yellow body with a fizzy white head. The aroma is sweet caramel and buttery aged malt. The flavor is similar to the aroma and is heavily caramel and oak with some aged malt/hops going on in the finish. The palate is creamy, medium bodied. A touch old? Still drinkable.
