Commercial Description:
Blue Point Brewing's "Old Howling Bastard" named after an infamous local character, this strong ale has plenty of character all its own. Made with English 2 row barley and Vienna malt. Reaching an alcohol content of 10% barleywine should be consumed in moderation. Strong malty caramel flavors balanced by lots and lots of hops. Try this in a snifter or wineglass. The trick is to never forget that after a few glasses you may become the "Old Howling Bastard"

(draft) Small off-white head that leaves nice lacing, atop crystal clear amber body. Aroma is moderately sweet, caramel, raisin, light berry. Taste is moderately sweet, caramel, maple syrup, some blueberry. Full, sticky body.

Draft at Max’s. Clear dark orange/red/amber color. Hoppy cherries and burnt nuts tasted and smelled... a bit of a caramelized malt flavor, almost burnt plastic malt off-flavors at times. Dry and woody, with a sour mold malt flavor that shows up once you’re into the glass.

On tap at Mahars. Poured a deep orange with little head. Aroma was alcohol and sweet. Flavor was very nice, sweet, touch of hops and alcohol.

(Bottle, thanks Pelle) Pours beautiful hazy red. Nougat coloured head. Dried fruits and fruits in aroma with notes of figs, raisins and plums. Sweet sugary, fungy/caramelly and a bit nutty maltyness. Undertones of stored cheese, floral/flower nectar and hints of nettles. Pretty light hoppy nose considering that this is a barley wine from the US. Tiny hints of minty bubblegum. Nutty, caramelly flavour with dried fruits, salvia tasting liquorice candy, figs and some citric acid. Moderate hoppyness. Medium bitter and a medium dry finish. A rather nice Barley wine.

Pours brown. Smells of citrus. It has a sweet citrus hop flavor. You really can’t taste the alcohol which is amazing. It is a very drinkable barley wine.

12 oz bottle poured at Cole’s Barleywine Festival. Recommended, and well enjoyed. Deep amber, light head... not as sweet as some of the barleys I tried today, but definitely kick ass. Recommended.

(cask @ The Old Toad - Rochester, NY) Dark copper pour with no head to speak of. Aroma is rich and malty with some hints of butter, caramel, and some hops. Flavor is very rich and full with a good buttery and malty flavor at the beginning followed by a malty and sweet caramel middle and a slight bitter hop finish. Very warming and dangerously easy to drink.

2005 vintage hand-bottled sample from a growler, tasted in June 2006: Pours a transparent copper mahogany with a thin-lacing off-white head. Aroma of sweet caramel malt and lots of synthetic tobacco smoke along with complex dark fruits. Body starts with a viscous bubble gum caramel maltiness turning more smoky and earthy toward a warming finish. Would be a nicer barleywine were it not for the abundance of chemical off-flavors.
