Commercial Description:
Blue Point Brewing's "Old Howling Bastard" named after an infamous local character, this strong ale has plenty of character all its own. Made with English 2 row barley and Vienna malt. Reaching an alcohol content of 10% barleywine should be consumed in moderation. Strong malty caramel flavors balanced by lots and lots of hops. Try this in a snifter or wineglass. The trick is to never forget that after a few glasses you may become the "Old Howling Bastard"

Growler from rudolf. Fiery amber color with a thinner beige head. Aroma of sweet malts, some molasses and toffee. Flavor is up front but its a bit boozy and some astringency creeps in. Medium to full bodied, kind of hot. Nice beer but this one needs a bit of time to smooth out the rough edges.

Brewtopia ’05 Amber in color with a small off-white ehad. aroma is of whiskey, oak, fruit and hops. Flavor was pretty intense yet balanced and finishes smooth with a touch of swetness.

Sample at DougShoemaker’s 2005 December gathering - growler courtesy of rudolf. Reddiah-amber with a tight of-white head. Aroma has a very nice mixture of sweet and smoky notes. Flavour is like a peaty single malt, with some lingering caramel/butterscotch notes, and a dry finish. Quite a nice beer.

Shared at Yeha. Aroma was heavy caramel with some citrus. There was no head and the beer had a cloudy amber/copper color. Taste was of caramel and some hops. This was a very good beer.

I don’t know what possessed me to spend $17 on this one, must have been that cool looking label. 2000 Vintage with the thickest wax I’ve ever seen Took at least 5 minutes to dig through! Poured a medium and cloudy amber color with small sized off white head. Aromas of caramel, dark cherries, light alcohol and somewhat vinous. Very nice aroma. Tastes a little bit of a let down any showed signs of its age with tastes of caramel, fruits, alcohol and wine (all on the weaker side).

2000 vintage at the Yeha. Poured a cloudy amber with a white head. Strong aroma of caramel, citrus fruits and some alcohol. Taste is some fruit and caramel with a dash of cinnamon, leading to a dry yeasty finish. Flavor could have been a tad more pronounced but a nice barley wine.

Bottle at Rich’s 2005 YeHa. I do not recall who brought this vintage 2000 bottle, but thank you. Vinous, fruity, nice barelywine-like aroma with a slight candy sweetness present in the nose. Mildly hazy copper colored body with a smallish yellow/tan head. Sweet, caramelly toffee-like start which then turns more vinous in the middle. Finishes with a minute bitterness. The hops have faded, which isn’t a bad thing. Could use a bit more of the sweeter malts. Body is a bit dry for my liking.

growler. Thanks Rudy. orange-red body with a small white ring of head. aroma is mostly sweet caramel, yeast, sugar, and alcohol. very sweet flavour though not all that cloying...yeasty, hoppy orange flavour as well. the finish is sharp and long lasting. pretty good.
