beermatrix (1497), Twin Cities, Minnesota, USA Dec 20, 2007 Brightly dark ruby brown color that is brilliantly bold to view through. Capping is smallish and creamy tight of a light sandy tan hue. Keeps a firm skim present the whole consumption period. Packed in spotty lacing is stitched across the glass with good sticking power.
Aroma is soft of cocoa powdered fluff with a bit of whole grain breadyness thats a titch on the sweetened doughy side.
Taste is firm and round of some soft brown bread dough sweetness, some cocoa hints, perhaps a drip of maple. Semi soft and drying hoppy finish that’s fresh and green with a hint of grass and grain.
Feel is about medium with fairly solid tone and firm carbonation that keeps a nice tight tang and smallish bite of action adding to the overall flavors.
A nice drinking Winter ale (Red/Brown ale) thats soft, firm, and just tasty enough.
kyzr (910), Bozeman, Montana, USA May 13, 2008 From trade. Nice amber pour with small off-white head. Roasted malt, caramel, nutty and hint of pine needles on the nose. Flavor was caramel, toasted nuts, and matly. Nice texture with a hint of spice on the finish. Goodgrief (1018), Middletown, Delaware, USA Apr 12, 2008 Dec. 2007 - Amber pour with nice head and excellent lacing. Weak aroma of soapy caramel. Flavor was rich, malty caramel with touch of nutty notes and full, rich body. Really pretty good. Nice hoppy twang at the back end. A pretty good amber ale. blklab2007 (533), Connecticut, USA Apr 7, 2008 bottle poured a medium amber in color with good steady carbonation and a one finger head diminishing to a thin layer. aroma has caramel malt, spice, and hops. taste has a malted body that is smooth. hops and spice lend a nice flavor, finishing with malt and spice. some bitterness creeps in but the sweetness keeps it in check. very easy drinking beer with good spice level that complements not overpowers. Ughsmash (2985), Waukesha, Wisconsin, USA Apr 2, 2008 Bottled, BB 04/07. First question.. why would you make your Winter Ale a 4.5% amber? Poured medium amber with plenty of very light sediment in there and a nice cap of creamy off-white head. The aroma picked up toasty caramel and darker raisiny fruits with light grass on the sides and mild oxidation.. this held up rather well. The flavor began with grainy caramel notes and light plum.. greener across the middle with some raw alcohol and toffee.. sweet finish of toffee and some alcohol. Lighter-bodied with a grainy texture and a little more booze than there probably should have been in there. OK, but when I’m thinking "winter", I want a porter/stout/english strong ale. MI2CA (1036), Noblesville, Indiana, USA Mar 5, 2008 12oz thanks beastiefan2k - Aroma is toasted malts with a touch of hop spice. Pours transparent ruby red with a small head and good lacing. Flavor matches aroma. Palate is sticky. Not bad, but plain.
