I thought the 2000 and 2001 editions were excellent while the 2002 was just good. Every year the beer has a complex flavor that brings out the best in the featured hop.
The beer comes out early each fall. DO NOT BUY THIS BEER AFTER THANKSGIVING.
The 2002 edition had a nice mix of Vanguard hop and chocolate flavors. Still it was not up to the high standards set by earlier years. austinpowers (2828), New York, New York, USA

This is a hoppy brown ale in the US style, and is not reminiscent of the English Newcastle Brown Ale or its progeny. Plenty of malt is there for balance, so no brown ale addict can complain that what they got was actually an IPA. Quite bitter. argo0 (6978), Washington DC, USA

Aroma is floral hoppy, caramel, and medium sweet. Taste is wonderful -- floral hoppy and chocolate, and finished nice and roasty. The body is rich and full, with a pleasant chewiness. amx1970390 (466), Southampton, Pennsylvania, USA

To highlight one hop variety each year (Vanguard in ’02) in a brown ale seemed strange. Until I tasted it and found a complex, multilayered beer that both emphasises hop character throughout, yet is smooth and in balance. This bottle conditioned gem is worth laying down. sloth (1678), Ceciltucky, Co., Maryland, USA

This is a bottle conditioned ale.Good spicey hop flavor but also has a good malt presence. Fairly well balanced also.Alc. content for this years version is a little lower at 4.8%abv.Overall a pleasing little brew. HighGravity (890), Baltimore, Maryland, USA

While the beer is hoppy it is not over the top. The brown ale underneath is very tasty. Lots of chocolate and coffee. This beer should have been hopped a little more at the end of the boil/more dry hopping. jcalbi (378), New Jersey, USA

Very sweet, almost grape-like aroma with little hop aroma. Carbonation is low and the texture is rather chalky. Very rich flavors of chocolate, raisins and a certain nutty quality. Not a real "Hopfest", though.
