highlandlad (1189), Sydney, Australia Jul 21, 2008 This dreadful over-priced industrial lager is the only conceivable reason to visit the Blue Tongue shop-front in the Hunter Valley. And that ain’t much of a reason. All the other beers on offer there are available in bottles. The brewer, recently purchased by a local off-shoot of Coca-Cola, already brews a mediocre lager and a pilsener, so Lord alone knows why this is necessary. Presumably they needed something - anything - to fill a gap in the $10 tasting paddles that are so popular at the Hunter Valley outlet. The commercial description promises a "thick creamy head". Eh? On the contrary, my schooner had the familiar vanishing head that characterises macro brewing. Faint whiff of cereals, sugars and adjuncts. Nasty, grabby carbonation. Harsh on the throat. A sweet, gutless lager. Quite grainy, with no middle (where’s the malt?) and astringent POR bitterness. Cynical brewing. They charged $8.90 for a schooner of this crap and a soda water. Shameful business. Sledge Jr (2716), Omaha, Nebraska, USA Nov 26, 2006 On tap in the brewery garden. A golden pour with a white head. Fairly boring. No aroma at all. Slightly sweeter than the lager, but still nondescript. Just another boring pale lager. I can’t figure out what makes this any different from the bottled lager. Is it a marketing scam? Sold as a distinctively different beer at the brewery.
