Commercial Description:
Altbier, literally translated as “Old Style” beer, is a classic German ale. BBC Altbier is brewed with additions of Munich, wheat, caramel, and chocolate malts creating a delicate, but flavorful malt profile. This delicious amber colored session beer is balanced with additions of tradtional spicy German hops creating a light and floral bouquet to compliment its complex malt profile.

This does not have a very outgoing smell. It looks good held up to the light. The head lingers a bit as a sign of quality. The flavour is malty, scarcely noticeable of hops which are allegedly in the finish. The palate is smooth and pleasant. Overall, a refined taste, but perhaps too conservative to yield much returns for your money (in investment speak). What I mean is, it’s not too different - the best thing about this beer is its smoothness.

Amber with a thin white head. Aroma of mild caramel and light hops. Taste is malty and bland – mild caramel and cardboard. Mild bitterness on the back end, there’s just not enough going on here to get me excited.

Bluegrass Altbier is an amber color with a small head. The aroma is a bit malty with light floral notes. The flavor is well balanced with a great light finish.

Bottle. Finally got my hands on a fresh one. Sticky malt nose, dusty nutty aroma with roasted grain and resiny toffee and caramel. Some chocolate, as well. Clear, dark copper pour with a dense, rocky off-white head. Taste is lightly bitter and sweet, a smack of texture quickly drying to a nutty main. A dash of roasted malt with cookie dough and bread. Much more caramel and even a little butterscotch. Herbal spicy. Light body, crisp feel with a dry grassy ending (resembling other breweries’ Nut Browns, and even this brewery’s, which is much better). Not so much an Altbier as a cross between an American Amber and Brown.

12oz bottle notched BB D 07. Poured a medium amber color with a smaller sized off white head. Aromas of roast, chocolate, earthy, and toasted caramel. Tastes of caramel, light chocolate in the background, and some citrus.

12 oz, bb Mar 08. Aroma of cocoa and slight toffee. Flavor is cocoa and slight sourish berry, with a roasted nut and cocoa finish. Light-medium body is tingly and very well balanced between sweet and dry.

bottle - Pours amber with a one finger lingering head that laces nicely. The aroma is caramel malt and maybe a touch of spice. It tastes sweet and malty with some mild hops in the background. It’s another pretty average craft beer.
