Commercial Description:
An American standard, BBC APA is a full bodied and heavily hopped American Ale. It is copper in color and brewed with a blend of pale and crystal malts, balancing the citrus and pine flavors from large doses of American and English hops to create a very drinkable, hoppy ale. BBC APA is a hophead’s dream!

8/04/2008: BBC American Pale Ale has a hazy golden orange color with a fluffu ivory-colored head. The aroma has a good pine and citrus hoppiness with some underlying sweet toffee maltiness. The sweetness and maltiness is a bit lacking in the flavor, but a really vibrant and fresh pine hoppiness fills the gap up well. The bitterness level is higher than expected and possibly approaches the IPA range, but that’s okay. I’d rather it be a bit more hoppy and bitter than fall too far short! There is plenty of delicate lacing on the glass marking each sip. Due to the low malt level the body of this beer is medium light, but that’s okay too as it actually lends to the smooth, crisp drinkability of this refreshing pale ale. Nicely done BBC!

12 fl. oz. bottle (Best Before: Dec 08) from tish. Thanks! Rating #173 for this beer...

12 oz bottle. Pours a slightly hazy copper with a thin off white head that leaves light lacing. Citrus, floral, and grass hops dominate the nose. They smack you in the mouth as well, and there is some caramel malt flavor to balance. Med to full body, good carb, dry feel, and a little watery on the trexture. Damn fine APA, a hop heads delight.

Sweet hoppy nose with a copper amber pour and a small white creamy head. Sweet maltiness counter balanced by some citrus hop giving some well dserved bitterness. Overall nicely balanced. I could drink a few of these.

Bottle from Squire’s. Pours turbid orangy coppery with nose of bready pale malt, hopcitrus, grapefruit, and tangerine. Tastes bready malty, hoppy, with notes of citrus, slight florals, funk, and tropical fruit. Needs a tad more malt to become elite, but I’d drink this again with no qualms.

12 oz. bottle into pint glass. Nice rich copper brown with a bit of haze, a huge off-white head that provides great lace. Aroma is much more malty than I remembered or expected - doughy biscuit malt. I really am not getting hops at all on the nose - smells goos, just not like a pale. Very very funky flavor that, again, has way more malt than expected. It is all rich dough malt (with a wierd funky character) with a bit of a pine bitter finish. The BBC has 2 breweries that have separate owners and brew the same beers that reportedly taste a bit different. I have also heard that the beers have changed a bunch over time - this makes sense to me because I don;t remember the brew tasting like this at all. Pretty fizzy carbonation underneath a medium body on the palate. Overall: wierd, not very in style, a bit out of balance, but not terrible. I need to try this on tap at both breweries to sort this out. (rerate) On tap at (Shelbyville Road) brewpub. Had a pint of this today and it was great and just as I remembered… nothing like the funky off balanced APA that the downtown BBC branch bottles, despite sharing the same name, label, etc. (3.7)

Nice sharp hop aroma when the bottle is opened. Pours a clear reddish-amber, with a quickly fading white head. Fairly grassy hop notes tied in with caramel malts. Nice middle of the road beer.

Tap at brewpub: Now this is a pale ale! Solid hoppy aroma of grass, weeds and other hops of that type followed by a well-structured hop flavor. An all around, extra-hoppy pale ale. Very nice.
