Commercial Description:
American Style barleywine: so named because of its high, wine-like alcohol content and the usage of American hops. Deep amber in color and full bodied, with a blend of fruitiness, maltiness and hop bitterness to balance.

750 mL. Brownish/red leather in color. Powerfully aromatic, with a sensational array of caramel/toffee-like malt and dark fruits. Flavor is juicy and complex, flavorful and well extracted. It’s malt accented and provides me with several enjoyable descriptors, notably caramel, toffee, brown sugar and sweet, dark fruits. This is an excellent beverage, something BBC should be proud of.

Pours a brownish-amber color with a tan head. Aroma is of plums, citrus hops, caramel, and some alcohol. Flavor is strong of plums and other dark fruits up front that give way to the citrus hops, sweet malts, and alcohol. This brew isn’t too bad, but too much hops for a barley wine, I would call it a double IPA.

Pours a dark, coppery amber with a thin beige head. Aroma of dark candied fruit; plums, raisins. Roasted malt flavor, incorporating the raisiny and plum notes. Sweet, a bit syrupy. Pleasant overall, but not mind-blowing. Would like to try it again.

Bottle. Pours a roan color with a thin, off-white head. Nose is raisiny with roasted notes. Flavor was a mixture of hops, caramel, and roasted raisins. The roasted part almost had a burnt quality to it. Maybe this was from the alcohol that was running without cover and causing the acrid tones. The underlying sweetness could not provide enough camoflauge and the hop bitterness seemed to exacerbate the alcohol heat. A beer with potential, but currently somewhat schizophrenic.

Bottle... Murky prune-colored ale with a small, creamy, off-white head. Vinous, caramel, chocolate, dried plum and red apple nose. Heavy caramel malt sweetness with an entire regiment of boozy and metallic hop bitterness on it’s heels. Nice balance overall, but leans just a touch on the sweet side... just a touch. Full-bodied with a whole-milk mouthfeel and subdued carbonation. Lengthy, moderately bitter, drying finish. Kudos to shigadeyo for providing the bottle!

Draught at Flying Saucer - Nashville. Pours a hazy brown with spare frothy off-white head, somewhat lasting, and spare lacing. Aroma is heavy malt (caramel, cookie), heavy hops (flowers, perfume), average yeast (dough) with notes of honey and apple. Full body, spicy texture, lively carbonation, and a bitter finish. Moderate sweetness, acidity, and bitterness; roasted caramel malt and spicy raw hop flavor.

From the bottle this pours a clear reddish brown topped with a tan halo. It smells of dark caramel, earthy hops, molasses, and alcohol. The sweet malts are cut by the alcohol and a pine and grapefruit bitterness. Not complex, but very smooth and satisfying to drink.
