riversideAK (1444), Shoreline, Washington, USA May 5, 2008 Bottle from hopdog. Thanks Steve! Pours dark dark brown with little head to speak of. Aroma has notes of oak, light bourbon, and some roasted malt. The flavor has more barrel aged presence, as it is pretty damn woody with small traces of bourbon in the wood. The underlying stout really seems to not have a lot going on except some roast and some chocolate and perhaps a little salt/smoke. Lingering oak, but not over the tops. Might have been a little thin and over carbonated for style. Still, glad I got to try it.
derekbang (61), Indiana, USA Jul 5, 2008 Very disappointing bourbon barrel stout. I struggle to really call this a stout - palate was more like a porter. Very thin with a somewhat bubbly, frothy head (which didn’t seem right). The bourbon flavoring was extremely mild - after having other bourbon stouts like the Goose Island, I was expecting much more bourbon flavoring. Would not likely drink again. gwelch925 (28), Northern, Kentucky, USA Jun 28, 2008 Bottle. Was just as dark as all the other stouts that I have had ,but no where near as thick. When I poured this brew I saw no signs of head manifesting. As expected, flavors of chocolate and bourbon were present with some tones of oak and tobacco. Aromas of bourbon and roasted malts. LiebeBier (734), RIchmond, Virginia, USA Jun 27, 2008 Draft - While this beer does an amazing job at masking the alcohol content of the beer, it’s also lax in complexity of flavor. A very fine beer, but not the mouthfeel of a Rasputin or Storm King. GAManiac (178), Atlanta, Georgia, USA Jun 22, 2008 Bottle.
Pours deep black with a thin short-lived tan head that dissipated quickly leaving a hint of lacing. Aroma is dominated by roasted malts and baker’s chocolate with more than a hint of bourbon in the background. Taste had roasted malts and coffee and was slightly bitter before giving way to the chocolate and finishing with the burn of the bourbon in the finish. The mouthfeel was very thin with a little carbonation and good bit of bourbon. This is a decent stout but a little thin for my liking. AmEricanbrew (805), Left Coast, Louisiana, USA Jun 19, 2008 Bottle. Black with a frothy tan head. Dusty bakers chocolate and blackened malt aroma. Medium/full body and very smooth. Nice bitter blackened malt taste with a vanilla sweetness that cuts some of the charred malt bitterness. Not too bad.
