Commercial Description:
Cherny (english interpretation) means "black" in Czech (actually cerné). Bock (meaning "goat" in German) has it's roots coming from the north of Germany near the town of Einbeck. Over the years it made it's way south to the Bavarian/Bohemian borders allowing brewing artisans to perfect it's recipes. Our bock is a Czech rendition of the great beer combining the best of ingredients. Very deep black-red in color, Cherny Bock is a rather surprising dark single bock lager with a gentle bitterness, a lightly hoppy aroma and a roasted malt flavor to appeal to all your senses. A true gem to be discovered by true specialty beer lovers.

Draft at brewery, late summer ’09: Black with brown highlights. Roasty-toasty with chocolate notes. Balanced bitterness. Quite a bit of flavor in this "3.2." Easy to drink, too.

Re-rate: the first time I had this at the Bayou, I wasn’t much of a fan. I had it on tap at the brewery today and was blown away! Pours a very dark chestnut color with a huge foamy beige head. The aroma is excellent; rich malts, roasted chocolate, light hops. The flavor was great; nutty, bready malts, light chocolate, roasted flavors like a Stout but with all the goodness of a Bock. Excellent. I was amazed how beautiful the pour was and how good this tasted. My original rating was off of a old or bad batch. Very nice.

Great Utah Beer Run – Summer 2007
On Tap – Deep rich aroma with a dark brown color with a thin head. Dark malts where tasted through out the beer with a slight fruity essence. Very robust for a light brewed beer due to Utah Laws. Good drinking beer very dry finish a great beer for the night.

on tap-pours a tan head and dark mahogany color. Aroma is dark fruit, dark malt-some sweet/caramel. Taste is roasty, chocolate/coffee/caramel, dark fruit, secondary hops bite. Finishes with coffee aftertaste, close to a schwarzbier. Occasional. OK carbonation.

Draft jar at MacCools in Layton, UT. Brown-black brew with 2 finger head, nice faint hop aroma. Finely balanced taste, with slight bitter finish. Nothing harsh, just smooth and slightly dry. Nice beer. Excellent job of working with (around?) Utah’s weird laws (I believe by law this beer is max 4% ABV).

It pours a deep clear brown black, topped by a couple inches (YES!) of sudsy light brown foam. Excellent head retention, spotty webbed lacing. Bittersweet chocolate, a little pungeant spent grain initially, and then later on - some hop bitterness in the aroma. The grainy smell almost disappeared after the first couple whiffs. Delicious dry baker’s chocolate maltiness. I prefer my bocks on the dry side, so this one suits me just fine. Light undertones of some coffee and roasted grain flavors. Hops for balance only. Just shy of medium body, moderate carbonation. Fairly smooth.
