Bold City O Pumpkin Spice Coffee Stout

Pint at the brewpub at the CASK Homebrewers meeting. Dark brown/black beer with tan head. Aroma of coffee, dark malts, and a hint of spice. Flavor is a big blast of coffee with some dark sweet malt, molasses, and chocolate in the background, and a bit of pumpkin spices. Pretty good stuff and an enjoyable brew, but you really have to be a coffee drinker for this one.

This beer pours with a nice, deep brown pour. A touch of light coffee on the nose with a kiss of light cocoa on the back. The spice is quite subtle and only really appears on the back of the palate as a light astringency through the middle. It starts out a whole lot better than it ends up being.

Dark pour with a small head. Aroma has some roasted malts, coffee and sweetness. Not much detectable pumpkin or spice. Didn’t know it was there at all. Flavor is light with roasted malts and a slightly earthy flavor. Some coffee and burnt nuts.

Aroma is low on the pumpkin spic- maybe just a hint of cinnamon, with tons of sharp strong espresso. fresh coffee beans, and a fresh earthiness with almost an anise/licorice bite. Flavor turns out a bit weaker some light chocolate,, light spice, some roasted barley, burnt malts, and sharp pungent fresh roasted coffee/espresso, nutty with some light sweetness and earth- thins out a bit at the end, and the body is a bit weak overall. Interesting and somewhat unique, but just a bit watered down.

Bottle at Paul’s place for Kan’s visit. Pours a thick black with a thin white head. Coffee, spice, chocolate. Medium body, malt, chocolate, roast. Slightly acrid on the finish, roast and char.

Poured a deep dark black body with a full foamy beige head. Aroma was a nice combo with fresh roasted coffee, burnt malts, vanilla and fresh whip creme topping. The flavor had lots of sweetness from the pumpkin and spice coming through which cut the roasted notes substantially and and the coffee flavor seemed watered down compared to the aroma. The body was way to thin for a stout and the aftertaste was very qucik to fade away. Although I never really picked up any pumpkin in the aroma or flavor there were additional flavors/aromas that you don’t normally find in a coffee stout and was reather interesting.

Yay! I was at Bold City for the release of their second specialty beer. This is a vast improvement over the "B" Coffee Stout. Pours a very deep ruby that is nearly opaque with a good, one-finger tan head that has good retention and leaves some spotty lacing. Big aroma of pumpkin pie, maple syrup, hazelnut coffee. Taste is slight molasses with the flavors above. Has a nice background of spiced pumpkin pie and something like carrot cake. Eventually as this beer warms the body moves to some cardboardy dryness and nutty bitterness. Probably will try this out again when it gets bottled. 3.6

Re-Rate: Bottle. Lacing looks great along the glass. Big, light tan, very rocky head. Aroma is almost sour fruits. Not much pumpkin or spice at all. Taste is mostly cheap coffee. No pumpkins or spice. Watery body. Thin. More like Sierra Nevada porter than a pumpkin stout. Disappointing. 2.9
