Very dark, coffee color - full rich body - staying head - effervescent nose - soft velvet feeling in the mouth - luscious. Malt character with a hoppy aftertouch. Monks used to fast on this type of beer for 40 days! No food, only beer.

Sweet caramel, butter, and plenty of yeast in the aroma. Very dark copper colored brew has a medium palate. Nice spices in the flavor up front with tastes of yeast and caramel/toffee flavors throughout. Suprised me.

(bottle, traded with bierkoning) Hazy, murky brown colour with a reddish shine and a rocky beige foamy head. Yeasty, sweet toast-malty with caramel, notes of dark berries and a vinous alcoholic touch. Moderately sweet flavour, medium to full bodied with a moderate, almost crispy mouthfeel. Toast-malty taste with raisins and a touch of caramel; sweetish malty, slightly fruity and alcoholic finish. Rather average Dubbel.

I consider Abbey Dubbels to be my favorite style but it is hard to find an exceptional one. Beer number two in my "Dubbel Friday" and this one misses the mark. Aroma was yeast and cereal (call me crazy but it’s Cinnamon Toast Crunch). Pour was a dark brown with a nice 3 finger puffy head that laced the whole way down. Taste was musty yeast and not much else. No dark fruit. Aftertaste was dirty. Not very good.

On tap at Trollenkelder, Gent, as Trollenbier Dark. Didn’t realise this was a rebadge of Bornem Dubbel, else I wouldn’t have ordered it. But it turns out I hadn’t rated Bornem Dubbel anyway. Very dark brown colour with a fluffy tan head. There’s a sort of moist malt character running through the beer. On the nose there’s some fat fruit and a candi sugar sweetness. And, although the fruit carries through into the flavour, its sharp rather than rich and the mouthfeel is curiously thin. Not unpleasant but I didn’t find it particularly engaging.

(03/2007. As Trollenbier Bruin). Soft nose full of chocolate and a hint of tobacco. Tan head that falls quickly and leaves just a hint of lace. Surprisingly light on the palate, but with nice notes of pale malts and ever so slightly sour. Very drinkable.
