Philip (436), Illinois, USA Feb 26, 2006 Served at the Michigan Brewer’s Winter Festival. One of the better beers of the day, although my notes are atrocious given how cramped the festival was. Lots of bourbon and vanilla on the nose, leading into raisan, cherry, and chocolate on the palate. A nice biting hops/bourbon/alcohol finish. If this is indeed a 20% beer, it deserves a much higher rating. I had a hard time believing it was 20, I’m guessing more like 11-12. Pailhead (2572), Allen Park, Michigan, USA Feb 26, 2006 On tap: Aroma has moderate citrus hops with hints of chocolate and caramel and moderate bourbon. Dark brown with no transparency and a minimal brown head. Chocolate up front with hints of roastiness throughout. Moderate grapefruit hops in the finish. Not detecting any bourbon like I did in the aroma. Not nearly as sweet as their regular big beers. With the strong hop presence I’m assuming this isn’t the Solar Eclipse Imperial Stout aged in Oak barrels.
