Commercial Description:
“BBXXXPA” has also been brewed as part of Boscos American Beer Month festivities. Based on the old Ballantine’s XXX Pale Ale formula, this beer represents a style of pale ale brewed in America before the dominance of factory produced pilsners. Ballantine was one of the last regional breweries in the Northeast U.S. to go out of business. The label was sold, in succession, to several other large breweries but the beer produced under the original label was only a shadow of the original ale. As an interesting aside, the original ale yeast strain at Ballantine was supposedly preserved by a 1980’s California craft brewery. This strain then became one of the most common yeast strains in use by craft breweries across the U.S. Boscos yeast traces it lineage back to the original Ballantine strain. O.G. 1068 I.B.U. 42

Pours a slightly hazy copper color with a white head. Aroma is caramel, a hint of fruit, crystal malts, and floral hops. Flavor is biscuit, crystal malt, and a bitter floral finish.

Draft @ Nashville location. Slightly hazed amber in the glass with a frothy off-white head that left big lacing. Grassy/earthy aroma with a malt backing. Sweet flavor of caramel mixed with some hoppy citrus. Light body and light bitterness throughout.

(Tap) Pours a dark golden color with a small white head. Moderately strong hop aroma. Some grass in the aroma as well. Taste includes some sweet malt in addition to the crisp hoppy presence. Low carbonation and average palate. Another good beer from Boscos.

On draft at the Memphis location. The description in the menu was an English pale ale using all East Kent Goldings. Nice copper colored beer with a faint white head. Not much aroma, I’m afraid. Taste was sweet with caramel and a noticable herbal hop taste. Just a bit too sweet for me.

On tap in Little Rock 2/21/07. Light copper color with moderate hops and very little malt profile. This is a decent pale ale and a good session beer.

A light amber pour with a tan head and guey lacing. A light hoppy aroma with an apple aroma kicker. Flavor of rich sweet malt with a very good hop profile for a pale ale. Palate is solid all the way across. Good example of the style. Nice all round.

On draft as the Nashville brewpub. This was a nice beer. Strong hops flavor that really came through nicely.

Deep clear copper with an average sized white head. Well balanced sweet malt/hop aroma. Nicely hopped dryness that comes in at start and stays to the finish with just enough support from the malt to make this intersting. Solid APA. But the one I had was hopped to 62 IBU and the recipe change seems to have improved this one greatly as I look at the reviews from previous batches.
