Commercial Description:
“BBXXXPA” has also been brewed as part of Boscos American Beer Month festivities. Based on the old Ballantine’s XXX Pale Ale formula, this beer represents a style of pale ale brewed in America before the dominance of factory produced pilsners. Ballantine was one of the last regional breweries in the Northeast U.S. to go out of business. The label was sold, in succession, to several other large breweries but the beer produced under the original label was only a shadow of the original ale. As an interesting aside, the original ale yeast strain at Ballantine was supposedly preserved by a 1980’s California craft brewery. This strain then became one of the most common yeast strains in use by craft breweries across the U.S. Boscos yeast traces it lineage back to the original Ballantine strain. O.G. 1068 I.B.U. 42

draught. This is a full copper hue with no real head. Very leafy aroma with faint malts. The flavor is predominantly acidic with just a touch of pine and a thin sweet body. Some lingering caramel is evident later. This is all right.

Woody brown, my sample was very cloudy while my associate’s came out a bit clearer. Doughy, a bit phenolic, diacetyl, moderately candied and sweet. Hop profile was not what I expected -- they could be a little bold at times, but usually came off as unrepresented. Drinkable, but not their best work.

From brewpub sampler. Medium orange amber, good head. Undefined hop aroma. Light caramel body, good bop bitterness with elements of pine and earth on the finish. Not bad, rather enjoyable.

On tap at the Nashville brewpub. Eh. It’s ok. I mean, I respect the tradition of brewing classic American styles for American Beer Month, but it was dissapointing rolling into Boscos expecting some good choices and ending up with this and the BBR as the seasonals. Classic pale ale, but meager in all aspects. Smell was hoppy, but not special. Taste was hoppy, but not special. Nothing added to the paltry hops: no special fruity flavors, no floral quality, no earthiness, no nothing. I mean, I guess it’s a quality session beer, but I’m not looking for yet another beer I’d be willing to drink in mass quantities or for unspecial occasions. I expect better, Boscos.

Clear amber body with off-white head. Aroma and taste are both medium sweet, floral, caramel. Watery light-medium body.

Brilliant copper orange, decent white head. Fairly hoppy aroma, with earthy, piney notes dominating. Very subtle malt presence - toffee, maybe? - and a clean, peppery finish. Enjoyable. Draft at the Nashville location.

Draught in Memphis (Home of the King): I was really expecting more hops but beyond this was not disappointed. Had no idea what to expect and left thoroughly pleased with my choice of beer for the evening.
