Commercial Description:
Brewed from a formula from the Taylor Brewing Company in Albany, NY circa 1790, Boscos Stock Ale is a unique historical recreation. Utilizing the oldest know cultivated variety of hops in the U.S., Clusters, pale malt and a very common ingredient in early American brewing, unprocessed cane sugar, The simplicity of this formula reflects the ingredients that were commonly available during this time period. “Stock Ales” were commonly strong beers that could be stored, or “stocked” for extended periods of time. Draft sample at Boscos Squared. Poured clear dark brown color with average white fizzy head that mostly lasted with good lacing. Moderate toasted grainy and sweet aroma. Medium body with a smooth texture and soft carbonation. Medium toasted grain sweet flavor with a medium toasted sweet finish of moderate duration Solid drinkable brew and good for style. Very interesting brew.

On tap at the brewpub. Light amber with an off white head and great crackled glass lacing. Sweet cane sugar and malt aroma. Biscuit and toasty malt taste with pure sugar added lightly bitter grassy finish.

On tap. Pours slightly hazy copper with a tall head. I was surprised to find how hoppy this is. Citrus and green tea were noticeable in the aroma. The flavor is cleanly sweet with constant hops on the palate. The description misled me a bit. This is no more than an American pale ale when you get down to drinking it, but it is actually rather well done.

Sample from the Nashville brewpub. Poured a clear amber/red color with a thin off white head that quickly disappeared. The aroma was mainly sweet malt. Earthy notes were fairly muted, but present. The flavor wasn’t great. A small bit of diacetyl was present, with caramel malt dominating the palate. Again, not much of a bitterness in the finish. Rather plain. Not a big fan of this one.

Draft-Memphis. Murky pale brown in color with a white head. Hops are more present than the 53 IBU indicates and they balance well with this malty brew.

(Little Rock brewpub) amber with small white head. Aroma of sweetish malt. Full bodied, carmel malt. Didn’t notice the IBUs at all.

OG 1.066, IBU 55 The aroma was mostly caramel with light fruity esters. The beer arrived clear amber with a very low white head which fell very quickly. The flavor was light with caramel, but strong with fruity esters. Caramel was presence with a light crispness and a bit of spice. The finish was dry with a lasting spice presence into the aftertaste. The body was medium with a low level of carbonation. A nice beer, kinda low in carbonation but no offensive. Glass at Boscos Nashville.
