Commercial Description:
Flashback Anniversary Ale is an India Brown Ale with 6.8% ABV. This is the first beer we’ve made here that uses one single hop variety (Cascade) in the recipe in five separate additions. The fresh Cascade hop aroma and flavor is perfectly balanced with the dark roasted grains, making Flashback a very unique beer. We’re calling it an India Brown Ale to help illustrate its flavor to the consumer. It’s hoppy like an IPA but dark and roasty like a Brown Ale. Put them together and voila! Flashback at its finest!

We at Boulder Beer Company are SO excited to announce the release of our 30th Anniversary commemorative beer...Flashback Anniversary Ale! Flashback will be available in 4/6/12oz cases, 15.5 gallon kegs and 5.16 gallon kegs. It will be available to ship beginning Monday, May 4th and will be available through September.

Paying homage to our roots and celebrating our milestone 30th Anniversary, we give you Flashback Anniversary Ale, an India Brown Ale single-hopped with five additions of Cascade hops. Citrusy with a prominent hop aroma, Flashback finishes clean, crisp and dry, with dark roasted flavors from the biscuit and chocolate malts perfectly complimenting the bountiful Cascades.

Flash back to 1979 and you’ll find two professors at the University of Colorado in Boulder longing for the full-flavored tastes of the British ales they had grown to love while traveling overseas. Testing the entrepreneurial waters with a little project called a microbrewery, they began brewing and selling a few of their own. There begins the tale of Boulder Beer Company, Colorado’s First Microbrewery. From the original Bitter, Porter and Stout recipes that founded our brewery to our exciting new releases, Boulder Beer continues to uphold our tradition of innovation in brewing.

Flashback Anniversary Ale is the 9th Release in our Looking Glass Series of specialty beers. Discover all of our award-winning beers at BoulderBeer.com.

Pours amber out of 12 oz. bottle. The smell is sweet and the flavor is malty not much hops. Thought there would be a huge cascade flavor. An okay brew not one to remember for the ages though.

Bottle. Poured a dark auburn with a thin light brown head. Aroma is a nice balance of piney hops and grainy malts. Flavor starts out smooth and malty and ends with a bit of a pine hop kick.

12 ounce bottle from Wine & Beer Westpark, Richmond, VA. Pours a clear ruby-brown color with a large tan head with good head retention. Aroma of nutty malts, chocolate, floral and citrus hop notes. Taste is chocolate, nuts and bitter hops notes. A bit of lysol-like astringency.

Poured from bottle into Nonic Imperial Pint. Definitely not brown! More like a fairly dark reddish-amber. Nice moderate-sized head with lacing. Aroma of sweet caramel, molasses and citrus hops. Caramel, dark fruit, slight roastiness or smokiness - all countered by significant cascade bitterness, that persists long after taking the sip. Moderate carbonation, medium body and very dry finish. Now this is an India Brown Ale. I have had the Dogfish Head one before, that was more like a huge Brown Ale on crack. This is more of a true hybrid. That said, I prefer the DFH. Also, I would rather have a true IPA or a really good Brown. I like the idea of the hybrid, just not sure I love it in actuality. Regardless of all that blathering, this is still a really good beer. Nice job!

I like hoppy browns, and this one was middle-of-the-road for me. The malts weren’t overdone, but did mask the hops a bit, which isn’t untrue to style but wasn’t what I was looking for at the time. I think I prefer the present.

12oz bottle served at Houston BA Tasting in October. Pours a clear orange with a thin, white head. Nose is of citrus and floral hops. Taste is fruit and nuts. Mouthfeel has a bitter finish. So-so.

Red-brown pour with a large, creamy tan head, abundant lace. Aroma just a faint floral whiff. I would not have called this for an IPA-inspired brown ale. Flavor has a nice harmony of lightly roasted malts, chocolate, licorice, nut, tea. Floral-bitter hoppiness serves more as a balancing agent than a primary flavor. Medium body, nice zest on the palate.

Tried a sample at Brewfest Tallahassee. Nice roastiness and a hint of coffee but still American hops present.
