Commercial Description:
Flashback Anniversary Ale is an India Brown Ale with 6.8% ABV. This is the first beer we’ve made here that uses one single hop variety (Cascade) in the recipe in five separate additions. The fresh Cascade hop aroma and flavor is perfectly balanced with the dark roasted grains, making Flashback a very unique beer. We’re calling it an India Brown Ale to help illustrate its flavor to the consumer. It’s hoppy like an IPA but dark and roasty like a Brown Ale. Put them together and voila! Flashback at its finest!

We at Boulder Beer Company are SO excited to announce the release of our 30th Anniversary commemorative beer...Flashback Anniversary Ale! Flashback will be available in 4/6/12oz cases, 15.5 gallon kegs and 5.16 gallon kegs. It will be available to ship beginning Monday, May 4th and will be available through September.

Paying homage to our roots and celebrating our milestone 30th Anniversary, we give you Flashback Anniversary Ale, an India Brown Ale single-hopped with five additions of Cascade hops. Citrusy with a prominent hop aroma, Flashback finishes clean, crisp and dry, with dark roasted flavors from the biscuit and chocolate malts perfectly complimenting the bountiful Cascades.

Flash back to 1979 and you’ll find two professors at the University of Colorado in Boulder longing for the full-flavored tastes of the British ales they had grown to love while traveling overseas. Testing the entrepreneurial waters with a little project called a microbrewery, they began brewing and selling a few of their own. There begins the tale of Boulder Beer Company, Colorado’s First Microbrewery. From the original Bitter, Porter and Stout recipes that founded our brewery to our exciting new releases, Boulder Beer continues to uphold our tradition of innovation in brewing.

Flashback Anniversary Ale is the 9th Release in our Looking Glass Series of specialty beers. Discover all of our award-winning beers at BoulderBeer.com.

bottled. Amber brown ale w/ a slight nose of hops but mostly malts. Smooth mouthfeel, malty w/ astringent alcohol & some hops. It’s good but if you like this IBA then you have to try Terrapin’s.

12oz bottle from Total Wine (Tampa, FL). Pours a generally hazy dark brown with one finger creamy head that settles slowly. Aroma is sweet and malty with notes of caramel, floral hoppiness, honey, light citrus, honey, wheat. Flavor is sweet and malty with notes of caramel, honey, wheat, nuts, light floral hoppiness and spice. Generally medium body with a malty and slightly bitter finish.

Bottled. Poured rich, burnt orange with a short cap of yellowy-beige head. The aroma picked up a huge dose of floral and earthy hops over nutty and caramel sweetness.. I really dug the hop usage here. The flavor had more of the caramel than nutty notes (that were still there) and a pinch of sweet, roasted cocoa at the core, again with a huge dose of hoppage around (pine and floral with lesser citrus zest).. the bitterness that stuck on the finish lacked direction and wasn’t that enjoyable. Medium-bodied and well-carbonated on the palate.. I like the idea of a hoppy brown ale, but it’s hard to do well.. this was a decent example.

12 oz bottle served in a clear pint glass. Pours a reddish copper with very little head. Nose is malts, light yeast/bread, caramel, and hops. Taste is very odd, and much as it smells; it’s kind of like hopping up a dopple bock. Pretty good across all rating criteria, yet I couldn’t drink this that often. Very strange ... this is the New York Yankees of beers. It ranks high in every category, but still falls short in the end.

12oz bottle from Lukas Liquors. Pours clear brown with small tan head. Aroma is toasted malts, caramel, nuts, and hops. Flavor is bitter hops, toasted malt, caramel, some citrus, nuts and light alcohol burn. Nice mouthfeel and carbonation. Good to see a brewery try something new.

Good brown ale. Poured a clear brown hue with a tan head that had nice retention. Aroma had a nice malty mix of caramel and nuts, but also had a good bitter hop profile. Flavor had a great caramel malt base and the hops balanced out the sweetness beautifully. Very smooth and very easy to drink.

Pours dark brown with a thick tan head. The aroma is overall roasty with caramel, toasted malt and hops with maybe even a subtle touch of coffee. Flavors are quite roasty and a little sweet showing caramel malt, a hint of chocolate, and a solid dose of citrusy hops. Very good beer. Actually, one of the better Brown Ales I’ve had.

Bottle from Binny’s Beverage Depot in Orland Park, Illinois: This poured more of a dark amber than a brown (but who’s quibbling?) with a tall off-white head that provided much in the way of lace. The aroma was strong with citrus hops over some milk chocolate and toasty malts. The flavor was dark caramel with a splash of chocolate complemented by tart oranges, zest, and pink grapefruit. Nice dry, mildly bitter finish. Quite nice.
