Commercial Description:
Traditional winter seasonals are warm and comforting - not this Penguin. Diving in at around 10 percent alcohol by volume, Killer Penguin uses over twice the malt as other winter beers, and is aged for over 6 months to perfect the condition and flavor of this barleywine style ale. This beer doesn't ferment, it hibernates, and wakes up with an attitude.

Bonus bottle courtesy of JW77. Thanks!
Pours caramel colored with no lasting head. Smell is caramel and vanilla all the way. Taste is caramel, vanilla, and some nice hops to balance out the sweetness. Relatively thin bodied, but drinkable and smooth. Balanced, yet slightly caramel forward barley wine. No signs of the 10% which was nice. Not fantastic, but definitely still enjoyable.

Pour is a dark brown with a small tan head. Aroma is just the right amount of hops and malts with some brown sugar and molasses. Flavor is a nice caramel malt with the nice hops ad on. Maybe a touch watery in the end for a decent barley wine but this is quite tasty and something to find.

2007, 22oz bottle. Pours a golden brown color with a crisp, loud, off-white head. Smells of spicy hops and subdued sweet malts. Tastes earthy and spicy hoppy and sweet, mellow malty on the finish. Relatively thin body, maybe medium. Crisp carbonation.

Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 11-30-2006 22oz bottle with a wax seal 2006. The color is the standard barleywine orange-red with almost no head. It smells slightly like brandy and a little grain. There is a light, slightly bubbly carbonation. The taste is a little sweet This beer is pretty easy to drink despite the alcohol. This beer actually gave me a really strong buzz once i finished the bomber. Killer. Penguin. Not bad, but not my favorite barleywine. update 12/20/07 2007 vintage Good taste but too grainy for me, nice color and appearance, decent barleywine but not my style.

Vintage 2005 Pours hazy, dark amber with a mahogany tinge. A half-inch head of beige was short-lived and faded to a partial skim coat within minutes. A few errant dots of lacework. Aromatics are fruity, malty, and oxidized. Dried citrus fruits, wet cardboard, sherry, and burnt rubber round out the nose. Mouthfeel is medium, sticky, and tacky. The pallet has plenty more oxidized malt, stale toffee, dusty leather, wet math paper, and powdered spruce bark. Finishes with some warming alcohol, limping bitterness, and lingering wet construction paper. Wow, I remeber not being to impressed with this one fresh, but after only three years this one has really gone downhill.

Found this to be absolutely outstanding. Maybe even better than my rating shows.. Great roastiness to compliment a fantastic nutty aroma and flavor. Huge malt. Extremely enjoyable.

On tap at HDG @ DOTD. Deep reddish orange in color with a little off white head that left a nice lacing on the glass. Malty nutty toffee aroma. Caramel hoppy notes. Chocolatety malty flavor. Citrusy hoppy notes. Medium bodied. Finish is sweet. Decent beer. Drinkable.
