Commercial Description:
Traditional winter seasonals are warm and comforting - not this Penguin. Diving in at around 10 percent alcohol by volume, Killer Penguin uses over twice the malt as other winter beers, and is aged for over 6 months to perfect the condition and flavor of this barleywine style ale. This beer doesn't ferment, it hibernates, and wakes up with an attitude.

the waxy cap was annoying to get off but thats because i don’t like taking more than 10 seconds trying to open a beer. poured a cloudy dark amber, lighter than a typical barley wine. smell was malt, bread, heavy pine or spruce like hops. Taste was well balanced but not as strong as most barley wines, caramel acidic malt, powerful hops that lend to some bittering. alcohol warming. body was medium.

Waxy cover. A decent barleywine, but a little light for a barley wine. Light in color and taste, but not bad.

Poured a hazy reddish amber color with a small, off white head that left light lacing on the glass. Aroma of caramel malts, dark fruits, floral hops, pine, and tobacco. Taste of caramel malts, some wood, nuts, and dried fruits, citrus, and a bit of alcohol in the finish.

Foam Rangers January meeting. Amber pour with no head. Nose is sweet fruits with candied sugars and hops. Flavor is not very deep and lack what I’m looking for in a barley wine.

Bottle. Amber / red pour with a thin film head. The aroma is a little grainy with sweet malt also. The flavor is the same, sweet malt elements like most barleywine, but a strange grainy presence also.

bomber. pours a rich amaretto hue, w little head, bubbly recession. aromas strong of maple syrup, sap, heavy caramel, and sweet juicy dark fruit, but in a candy setting. the taste reveals a weighty caramel syrup flavor, but quickly finishing and disappearing on the palate. also, there’s a raisin component, as well as plummy dates. the finish improves with the warming temperature. Originally served at 55 degrees. the heat is noticed. 10% is sometimes hard to mask. i’m impressed at a unique spin on barleywine ale, but it could be improved in a few areas. i will revisit after it gains some age in the cellar.

Interesting bottle, looks nice but makes it a little difficult to open. pours fine enough, but the scents and tastes fall a little shorter than I had expected. The labaeling and description of the brew raised my expectations a little, and the beer fell short of them. Not too bad overall, but not exceptionally noteworthy

2007. Doesn’t taste like a barleywine at all. Flavor is strong, solid hops, with not much else. Hop flavor dominates the beer, which seems to be lacking any qualities that would mark it as a barleywine. Relatively thin, darker fruit flavors are non-existant. Alcohol is hidden well. Final word: a pretty decent IPA/Double IPA, not a barleywine.
