Commercial Description:
Traditional winter seasonals are warm and comforting - not this Penguin. Diving in at around 10 percent alcohol by volume, Killer Penguin uses over twice the malt as other winter beers, and is aged for over 6 months to perfect the condition and flavor of this barleywine style ale. This beer doesn't ferment, it hibernates, and wakes up with an attitude.

Bottle. A mix of light bread, toasted and caramel smells for the malts, moderate spruce note for the hops, light broth for the yeast, and port, alcohol and carboard in the background. Head is small, wispy, white, with virtually no lacing and is fully diminishing. Color is red/brown. Flavor starts lightly sweet and acidic, then finishes lightly bitter. Palate is medium, creamy and has a lively carbonation.. Not bad flavors, just weaker than I expected.

Nice Barleywine, very smooth and malty. Not much bitterness, but there’s enough to provide balance.

Bomber pours a mostly clear chestnut body with a small and fleeting beige head that diminishes to a film and cap. Aroma is malty and bready, mostly caramel, with a hint of pine hops. Medium body with subdued carbonation. Taste is malty caramel and toffee, almost chewy. Red apple notes add complexity. Hop biterness, pine and a hint of grapefruit, adds a nice balance. This 2007 edition is an improvement over earlier bottlings.

(Bottle 65 cl) Courtesy of markgugs. Clear, amber golden with a dense, shaving foam-style like head. Aroma of overripe fruit and sherry. The body is surprisingly only medium with a little caramel and overripe fruit in there. Discreetly bitter. Fairly average Barley Wine. 191207

22oz. Bottle: Medium sweet aroma. Smells of caramel, malts, piney hops, rye, and some alcohol. Poured copper/amber in color with a small to medium-sized beige head that lasted throughout. Very good lacing. Clear. Sparkling. Lightly sweet, medium bitter flavor. Tastes of malts, alcohol, chocolate, rye, dough, tar, and spices. Medium body. Thin, watery, but slightly sticky texture. Average carbonation. Malty, slightly sweet, alcohol finish.
