Commercial Description:
Traditional winter seasonals are warm and comforting - not this Penguin. Diving in at around 10 percent alcohol by volume, Killer Penguin uses over twice the malt as other winter beers, and is aged for over 6 months to perfect the condition and flavor of this barleywine style ale. This beer doesn't ferment, it hibernates, and wakes up with an attitude.

2007 vintage. In the bottle at the 2007 Crescent Moon Holiday Beer Tasting. Pours a deep dark purple reddish amber with a thin white head. Seems a bit oxidized. Big ethanol in the nose. At this young age, the beer is rather disappointing. It just does not seem as big as it should be in any category. I’ll age my 2007 bottles for awhile before opening.

Tallahassee, Fl. - Liquor Loft - 22 oz bomber with a waxed seal - 2007 bottle. Dark burnt orange to dark tan pour with a light off-white head. Floral-like aroma with some spruce, hints of mint and a bit of booze. Flavor has some bourbon undertones, citrusy notes, sweet cake mix and caramel. Smooth mouthfeel that turns quite vacant near the end of the bottle - probably could use some aging. Overall, decent.

Copper-amber body. Small wispy head. Sweet, caramel malty hot nose. Metallic at end. Not very impressive even with age.

2007 bottle. The aroma is of molasses, raisins, prunes maybe a touch of pine. There is virtually no head, a little lacing. The body is clear and black/copper in color. The initial flavor is a little bitter, sweet. The finish is long and turns a touch acidic. Probably get another bottle to age. The body is medium, the texture creamy and the carbonation soft.

Bottle. Fresh 2007 vintage. Interesting barleywine. Lots of dried fruits: prunes and raisins especially. Leather. Pound cake. Mint and fresh cut grass. Pours a rich toasted amber with a frothy white head. Flavor is quite sweet... even for a barleywine. Lots of maple syrup, brown sugar and honey. Dried pitted dark fruits. More brown sugar finishing with zesty citrusy dry hops. Medium to full bodied. Not that viscous and oily given its high sweetness.

22 oz. bottle - pours dark amber with slight head around the edges; sweet vanilla aromas; alcohol too; light malt flavors and a little hops mixed in with molasses-like sweetness; texture is a little thin

Dessert-y cake aroma crossed with a pruney AIPA. Nice sealing wax top, don’t care for the label. Darkish, clear mahogany brew. Vanilla, tangerine, caramel milkshake flavor with moderate hopping. Better as it warmed. Chainmail foam that clings to the side of the glass. Woody, lightly sweet finish with a milky body. Kind of like a baseball game -- brief flashes of interesting stuff with pretty big tracts of boredom. But then, that’s why you drink beer at the ballpark. Looks like this is going to finish out my November 2007 ratings unless the Beer Fairy shows up here in the next couple of hours. A little better than fair.Market Square Liquors.
