Commercial Description:
Traditional winter seasonals are warm and comforting - not this Penguin. Diving in at around 10 percent alcohol by volume, Killer Penguin uses over twice the malt as other winter beers, and is aged for over 6 months to perfect the condition and flavor of this barleywine style ale. This beer doesn't ferment, it hibernates, and wakes up with an attitude.

2006 vintage. Pours a fairly light caramel (for a barleywine anyways). Not much head, although decent lacing. First taste was moderately hoppy with frankly a thinnish malt backbone. It doesn’t seem to have the creamy mouthfeel I’m looking for in this style. That being said, its quite drinkable. Not one of those slow sippers. Finish is dry with some tobacco notes. Overall- decent brew for a cold snowy day like today.

2006 22 oz. bottle - Pours a deep amber color with a 3/4 finger thick off white head. Very light spotty lacing. Aroma is esters (apple), toasted malt, and brown sugar. Flavor is very subtle. Caramel malt and light esters. Medium body. Thin palate for a BW. Not one of the better BW’s, but worth a try.

Bottle from Capone’s. Red wax sealed bomber. Pours a nice candy apple ruby color with 1-finger off-white head. Aroma is caramel malt, figgy fruit, brown sugar, some notes of scotch, cognac, cabernet, and oaky bourbon. Fairly dense palate, with flavors of dense malt, on the tart side, with some fruit, cognac, and oaky bourbon spirity notes. Almost a beer/spirit hybrid, this one is not for lightweights.

Sweet malt aroma with some bitterness, and earthy hops make up the aroma. Dark brown with a cherry wood look. Full palate has lots of alcohol, peppery flavors and some malt. Not too great.

Looks great, a dark reddish amber, crystal clear, with a slender tan head that lasts none too long. The aroma has a sharp caramel, a drop of molasses, alcohol, tart fruits, and bitter nuts. Smooth. The flavor isn’t complex, but it’s fairly satisfying... especially since I’ve been "playing" outside in our frigid temperatures too long today. Caramel, a citric tang, molasses, and a floral bitterness make up the flavor - nicely blended. It finishes on a bittersweet, sticky note with a low alcohol burn. Not bad at all.
