Commercial Description:
Traditional winter seasonals are warm and comforting - not this Penguin. Diving in at around 10 percent alcohol by volume, Killer Penguin uses over twice the malt as other winter beers, and is aged for over 6 months to perfect the condition and flavor of this barleywine style ale. This beer doesn't ferment, it hibernates, and wakes up with an attitude.

Deep golden beer out of the bottle with a hoppy nose with hints of alcohol. Pretty standard barley wine with lots of orange citrus and sticky caramel. I thought I got some smokey wood toward the end. Okay barley wine.

Very thin in body. Tastes more like a poorly crafted IPA than anything. Has an off-metallic finish. The aroma has some promise, but not overly prominent. More malt would really help this beer out. Actually, more of everything- except water.

2005 red waxed top bomber. Pours a mahogany amber brown color with a small white lacing as a head. Aroma is a malty woody solution with alcohol detected. Taste is mildly malty with hints of dark fruit blended with soaked wood and grain. Alcohol is detected in the back of the throat. A rather bland barleywine. Seems as though all the effort was put into the design of the bottle instead of the actual beer.

Bottle thanks to jsquire for sharing: Brown in color with a fizzy tan head. Aroma, molassas, and some fruits, mildly hoppy. Flavor, mostly sweet with some bitterness coming through towards the end.

Fill the glass as a fizzy mahogany liquid with small head that dies. Faint in the aroma with little smell of malt and perhaps wood as well. Not a whole lot of flavor worth discussing besides that its sour and holds a mild malt backbone. Slight caramel and wood is detected with addition of cigar tabacco. Alcohol presence goes undetected with only its effect the key to noticing it. Fancy bottle and all but the bw falls shy from really winning me over.

The aroma has alcohol, caramel, and herbal hops. The appearance is orange-brown with a small head. The flavor has lots of brown sugar, alcohol, and citrus. The palate is a little thin. Overall it’s OK but not great.

Bottle: Nose of sweet plum, tons of caramel malt and a bit of alcohol. Sweet plummy hops and caramel are strong. The flavor is a bit thin with a light menthol note and some expected candyish hop notes and sweet malts. A bit unbalanced, but still has a nice nutty character. A bit of overbearing alcohol in the tial. Nice.
