Commercial Description:
Traditional winter seasonals are warm and comforting - not this Penguin. Diving in at around 10 percent alcohol by volume, Killer Penguin uses over twice the malt as other winter beers, and is aged for over 6 months to perfect the condition and flavor of this barleywine style ale. This beer doesn't ferment, it hibernates, and wakes up with an attitude.

Tap at Ginger Man. Deep amber beer. Thin head. Aroma is lightly malty. Soft fruit with cherries and berries over a soft sweet maltiness. Not overly complex and the hoppiness is quite subdued. It’s a bit plasticy as well and after awhile it begins to come across as fairly bland. Pretty uninteresting.

22oz wax sealed bottle. 2008 vintage, served in a snifter. Poured a copper color with an off white head that quickly dissipated. Plenty of carbonation. Lightly hoppy aroma with some malt. Dark sugar flavor predominates. I found this very lackluster. It could have used some more hops to balance out the malt.

Nice deep amber pour with a huge head that fades gradually. Aroma of fruit esters and some hoppage with a very mild alcohol burn in both scent and flavor. Does not taste like it is 10% by any means. Quite caramelly as well. Not a bad beer but does not evn remotely live up to the great name.

Brewed in the USA.... Pours a hazy ruby color with a thin off white head. Aroma of dark fruits, malts, and caramel. Taste is of super sweet malts, some mild hops, and fruit. The mouthfeel is robust but very very sweet with a dry mild alcohol burn at the finish. Overall, I would say this is enjoyable but a bit on the sweet side.

22 oz. bomber: This one pours a deep ruby color. There was no head on mine at all. The aroma was good, but a little light for a barleywine. Some dark fruits, caramel and hops come through. The taste is similar to the taste. It feels like a 10% beer, but the taste is a little light, but still decent. Somewhat sweet caramel taste with some bitterness. Decent enough, but there are many better ones.

Bomber, pours a ruby red color. Not much going on not too sweet or too hoppy. I prefer Barely Wines to be on the sweet side, but nevertheless it is a good beer but not my favorite Barely Wine.

Deep ruby pour with off white head. Sweet, hoppy aroma with a bit of weird, body odor funk. Taste is alright, balanced, hoppy, with a great grapefruit bitterness. Finish is a bit sweet. Overall, decent, and better than I was expecting.

2008 Vintage bomber, ordered at Old Chicagos in Overland Park, Kansas. Pour is ruby brown golden, with some nice settling and a one inch tan head. Nice lacing as the head falls. Aroma of caramel sweet maltiness and bright pine resin hop. Nice balance, though it is certainly more malt than hop. Taste is caramel malt orange sweetness and piney hops. The resin from the nose carries over to the taste. Nice balance of flavors in this one, though nothing great about the malt or hop. Not totaly refined, but not unpleasant. Overall decent enough Barley Wine.
