| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Mar 1, 2009 Golden orange pour with a 1.5 finger thick white head. Doesn’t stay around for too long but does leave a smattering of bubbles and foam once it’s gone, and some nice sheet lacing. Nose of orange juice, orange pulp and flesh, grapefruit, caramel malt and some grassy/earthy notes as well. The orange juice notes really lend it a unique smell. Fore is almost a bit watery at first, with oranges, lemons, caramel and grass present. Back of the tongue is more sweet than spicy, a very nice lingering caramel and citrus sweetness. Medium astringency, mouthfeel and body appropriate to style. Slick palate from the hop resin. Long finish, begins bitter, then ends in a spicy sweet note with everything blending together. Nice, solid IPA grampageoff (13), arvada, Colorado, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Mar 1, 2009 Pale yellow with a nice 1 finger soapy head. Color is a little paler than I like to see with an IPA. Really nice lacing throughout the glass. Nose is spicy hops and citrus. Taste is bracingly bitter hops, grapefruit, and a teeny bit of sweet malt. Nice and sticky just how I like it. Perfect carbonation for the style, and the bitterness builds a bit as you go. This is a good IPA. I will be buying this again. otakuden (518), Vero Beach, Florida, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 13/20 | Feb 23, 2009 I’ll say it first and I’ll say it right now; no one better mess with my mojo. Once my groove is on, all bets are off and no bars are held. I would imagine this is the mindset behind the delicious and funkadelik creation from Boulder Brewing known as their Mojo IPA. Quite the underappreciated brewery, Boulder Brewing is all about the 70s retro funk, groove, and psychedelics, hence their “looking glass” series of beers of which I have sitting before me. Specifically, today I have their Mojo IPA. It would be rude to enjoy the funk, so I too shall get my mojo on and delve into her groovy depths.
Hazy orange depths glint and glitter at me while a puffy soft orange head rests merrily atop her liquid depths, fading gracefully into bubbly tufts and sticky lace. She foams on cue, releasing a succulent perfume of bright oranges, lavender, sunflowers, pine sap, hop oils, grapefruit, and lemon zest. Unable to resist her flirtatious call, I delve into what is a thick and sticky body which immediately clings to all open and available surfaces within my mouth. Yum. My first impression is of freshly cut oranges dripping their golden nectar into my mouth followed by a brief zest of lemon. Backing up the succulent citrus notes are massive amounts of crushed pine needles, wet sap dancing with aromatic hop oils, grapefruit, and a bit of frothy texture to balance her overall sticky nature. Nipping naughtily at the tip of my tongue and all along my tastebuds, a lingering bitterness refreshes my palate, leaving my mouth watering for more even as the clinging sweet bitterness grows. Very wet, sticky, fresh and refreshing, I am thoroughly grooving with the Mojo IPA from Boulder Brewing and as my glass empties, I bid a sorrowful farewell to our sensational retro affair.
For anyone who has developed that finer appreciation of the magical plant, hops, the Mojo IPA is calling your name through the looking glass. Fear not what the other side may bring, and instead embrace her freewheeling spirit and adventurous nature. Easily one of the most quaffable IPAs I have enjoyed in a while.
