From the aroma, I don’t believe that this is an oatmeal stout. The flavor is a little better - the oatmeal becomes more evident, it is slightly sweetened with some vanilla undertones. A slight bitterness comes out in the finish, almost like dark chocolate. Not bad.

| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Dec 26, 2009 Had this one as a treat from Jazz88, over for dinner, though I also have one in the fridge.... Gosh I’ve had a lot of wood-aged beers lately; not such a rarity as it was a few years back. The impact of this pedestrianisation of wood is not entirely clear to me. This beer does seem more muted than a typical Imperial, perhaps esp. with respect to the chocolate, though there is particularly big roasted flavors. There is also a notable hop presence here, typical of the west of the Mississippi versions. Not fully to my taste, and interestingly we didn’t rush to finish the bottle when our dinner was broken up by the need to tend to our kids--a certain ambivalence about it? gws57 (1148), Saint Charles, Illinois, USA

Oily pour, opaque dark brown with a bubbly, light tan head; strong cherry, whiskey, smoke and maple notes in the nose; well balanced chocolate maltiness offset by very strong coffee hoppiness and some bread dough yeast; strong alcoholic and bitter finish. A very good stout and nice on this cold winter’s night. Pawola22 (783), Kansas City, Missouri, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Dec 25, 2009 22oz bottle. Pours a black body with a creamy, finger-width, brown head that dissipates slowly and leaves a nice lacing. Aroma is dark and milk chocolates, roasted malts, some hoppy fruits, and an even amount of earthy, oak. A light burnt malt and alcohol as well. Flavor is roasty up front along with a bit of a burnt caramel. Rich, dark chocolates blend with more smooth, milky, oatmeal chocolates and a light fruit. Finishes with a bit of an earthy oak, sweet vanilla, rich chocolates, plenty of roasts, and a light bitterness. The light amount of burnt roasts dry this nicely and leave a moderate to long aftertaste. Just a hint of alcohol warmth. Medium body with a moderate carbonation. Overall, a tasty beer. Smooth with plenty of sweet roasts. Nice chocolate flavor and a subtle, earthy oak make this quite enjoyable. aaronh2012 (19), Maryland, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Dec 25, 2009 Smooth, abundant black and chocolate malts. Can’t seem to find the oak though. It’s ok but a bit pricey. I think I’ll be restricting this one to any visits to Colorado. msante79 (844), Orland Hills, Illinois, USA
