Commercial Description:
Planet Porter is a big beer for everyone. Don't be afraid of the dark; this beer is very drinkable and remarkably smooth, brewed for a malty, coffee-like flavor. A once almost extinct style of ale, Boulder Brewing helped revive the category and this is now one of the oldest American porters.

12 oz. bottle from Total Wine in Jacksonville, FL. Pours a dark brown with a thin tan head. Aroma is malt, coffee, and the taste matches the aroma. Nice and easy to drink, but nothing all that special about it.

Thin, soapy, with a big ’wet dog’ body. I get strong cola bean in here, really no coffee or chocolate. Sweet and alkaline with chalky finish. Barely and flavor- not interesting, not even really a porter. Poor attempt.

Poured from a 12oz bottle and served in an English pint glass. This beer poured a dark cola brown with a thin, bubbly head that quickly faded away. A small amount of lacing was left around the glass. The aroma of the beer consisted of lightly roasted malt, caramel, and chocolate. The flavor included a slightly sour, lactic chocolate note that detracted from the overall experience. Some very mild vanilla and roast were also present. The mouthfeel was light to medium-bodied with a bit more carbonation than I would prefer in a porter. Not one of the better examples of the style.

This black ale poured with almost no head. There is a chocolate malt flavor that is quite thin with a slightly bitter finish. Perhaps it’s from another planet.

Bottle. Moderate malt aromas of cereal, toasted and strong coffee, light resin for the hops, light earth for the yeast, with tar and paper in the background. Head is rocky, light brown with excellent lacing and is fully lasting. Color is dark brown to black. Flavor is lightly sweet and acidic to start, and finishes lightly bitter and sour. Palate is medium, watery and a touch creamy, and has a lively carbonation. It finishes moderately astringent. A decent porter, but could’ve been a little more complex.

Bottle. Aromas of chocolate and roasted dark malt. Very dark brown color with a decent beige head. Near medium body with smooth, creamy carbonation. Dark roasted malt, a touch of coffee, a hint of sour. Dry, smooth, and just bitter enough. Leaves a bit of tingle behind.

Bottle, Pours clear dark brown with garnet highlights and a fading tan head. Cocoa aroma with a touch of pine. Light body, medium carbonation. Lightly sweet taste, with chocolate, coffee, nuts. Crisp finish that is lightly pine tinged, but not very bitter at all. Not a lot of depth here, but I don’t think they were aiming for that. This beer comes from the refreshing end of the porter world.
