Commercial Description:
Planet Porter is a big beer for everyone. Don't be afraid of the dark; this beer is very drinkable and remarkably smooth, brewed for a malty, coffee-like flavor. A once almost extinct style of ale, Boulder Brewing helped revive the category and this is now one of the oldest American porters.

Very dark mahogany beer, almost black with a lovelly lush , frothy tan head. Aroma subdued but its that of treacle/dark toffee malts. Semi-roasty bitterness to taste,, hints of fruit, juicy, slight, finishes quite milky. Quite well carbonated for a porter, and rather thin in mouthfeel for the stylle. Overall not a great porter , but its certainlly very much drinkable. I would say this is oddly a porter i might enjoy more in the heat of summer.

I tried this beer out of the bottle after pouring it into a pint glass. The first thing I noticed about the beer is that it looks almost black and very dense. No light penetrates the beer. The head was much lighter and thinner than I would have expected after looking at the beer. The beer has a slight smell of molases and malt. The beer felt a little thin in my mouth compared to many porters I have tried. The beer’s flavor wasn’t my favorite. It tasted malty with a faint hint of coffee was and too sweet for my liking (very drinkable though).

Bottle. Very dark brown with virtually no head. Rich coffe and fruit aroma. Flavor was coffee and malt. Aftertaste was dry malt. Recommended.

12 oz. Bottle at 810 Zone in Leawood, KS. Served too cold, initial taste was a bit thin. Hoped it would be denser when it warmed, but it wasn’t. All of the traditional flavors are there, roast, coffee, malt, yet the body is too thin and the flavors too muted for this one to matter much.

Pours an opaque black with slightly transparent dark brown edges and a thin, spotty-lacing light tan head. Mildly sweet earthy grainy toasted caramel malty aroma has a touch of milk chocolate. Body starts fairly full, but with a biting carbonation and thinning some toward the finish. Flavors include toasty bready malts, earthy dark chocolate, and the faintest hint of light fruity tartness before a mildly roasty bittersweet finish. An ok porter, but could use a little more body and depth of flavor.

Bottle. Poured a very dark tan color with a sliky lace on the glass. Aroma of some roosted grains is there. Taste of orange is a bite at the after taste.

12 oz bottle from Mystery Swap (thanks jjpm74!). Pours a near black with a large tan head. Nose is very nice, with some vanilla, chocolate and roasted grains. Taste is the same with some mild hoppiness as well. Hgh carbonation. Medium body. Easy to drink straight-forward porter. Pretty good.

Don’t smell it from the bottle! It smelled like dishwater right from the bottle. When poured, though, it got a nice choco-roast malty aroma with nutty sweetness. Very deep ruby black, big dark tan head, bad label, standard micro 12-oz longneck. Western hops, somewhat metallic, some off fishy flavors, mildy tart. Medium body. Finishes out rather pleasantly - medium quick, light roast, cola-ish. This was a fair session porter, but not particularly bold or remarkable. Ale-in-the-Mail selection December 2006.
