Nice creamy tan head. Smoke, bittersweet, coffee up front. Kind of fruity on the backside. Medium body with lively carbonation. Pleasing for a porter. sneagrams3 (1762), St. Louis, Missouri, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 17/20 | Nov 28, 2006 12oz bottle. Dark and opaque. Tan fingerwidth of head. Malty coffee bittersweet chocolate flavors. Nice and toasty. Great flavor. This is a nice porter. Just right temperature. Smooth transition from malt to finish hops. Finish has a good punch of citrus and piney sticky hops. Good balance, relatively, between the malts and hops. Although both tend to gravitate toward the bitter side of the spectrum. Damn tasty! kenb (1100), Oregon, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Nov 25, 2006 Updated: Nov 26, 200612 oz bottle via csbosox (thanks!). Best by 01/05/07. Pours almost black with ruby accents with a large tan head. The head lasts for awhile and leaves lots of lace on the Pilsner glass. Not getting much aroma from this one, just mild floral hops, some vanilla and toffee. Taste is surprisingly bold though. Burnt malts, espresso, currents, soy sauce, licorice and hops. Strong chalky and burnt aftertaste. Light/medium body. Over-carbonated. jhumphries69 (736), Tyrone, Georgia, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Nov 14, 2006 Pours very dark brown (nearly black) with a dark, tan head - that is thick, mountainous, and lasts the duration of the drink. The aroma is predominantly of citrus fruit hops. Fighting past the hops the aroma reveals some bitter cocoa and hints of caramel. The flavor starts bittersweet - more bitter than sweet - with an interesting combination of dark malts and heavy grapefruity hop flavor. Characteristic porter flavors (black malt, toasted bread, chocolate) begin to shine on the middle of the tongue. The middle of the tongue also discovers some malt sweetness and toffee. The back of the tongue finds more citrus hops and some hop bitterness ending in a full-bodied and somewhat hoppy finish with an after-taste that causes chocolatey, hoppy tasting burps. Quite nice, although heavy (don’t try to drink this on a full stomach). mreusch (745), Olathe, Kansas, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Nov 9, 2006 Bottle; pours deep black with a very generous thick and creamy dark tan head, great lacing. This is one good looking beer. The roasted malts dominate the aroma and flavor with some nut, coffee, and a dose of hops on the backend. A nice mix of malt and hops. marchcow (664), Coralville, Iowa, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Oct 29, 2006 Bottle. Hoppy fruity and floral aroma. Little malt aroma noticable. Thick frothy tan head, dark brown beer. Bitter flavor. Strong hops presence almost overpowers the malt. Dryish finish with bitter duration. Not bad. Ok overall but very little roasted malt flavor comes through as far as I could tell. Perhaps a little more as you go along. vyvvy (2068), Hazelwood, Missouri, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Oct 18, 2006 Pours very dark brown with a reddish hue and large tan head. The aroma has loads of clean roasted malt with some coffee notes. Considering the ingredients this smells very crisp. Medium body that is crisp and smooth with a nice amount of carbonation. Flavor starts with roasted malt and a light crispness that compliments the roasted character. The finish has spicy hops and clean finish. A very well made porter. NeonLX (258), Wisconsin, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Oct 16, 2006 From a bottle, this pours a solid, opaque near-black with ruby edges. Fairly sizable tan head that stays around ’til the end. Full nose of roasted malt & a touch of hops. First taste is caramel with a hint of coffee. Then there’s a surprising followup of moderately strong hops--almost to the level of a good APA. Not a particularly heavy porter. Overall, a superb combination of roasted malt & hops; definitely a winner!
