Commercial Description:
A dry, medium-bodied dark ale. Its intense dark-roasted barley malt flavor is perfectly balanced by complex hop character.

12 fl. oz brown bottle from heemer77. Dark red brown pour, smallish tan head. Light roasty aroma, sweet malts, a dash of chocolate. Dark and bitter malts in the mouth, some hop bitterness with a little floral note as well. Dryish finish with a lot of roasted malt. Very drinkable.

Pours so very dark brown with a thick creamy head. Aroma of roasted malt, caramel, fruit and very slight coffee/chocolate scent. Flavor is rather sweet. Starts with a fruity taste mixed with caramel that gives way to roased malt and slight hops. Altogether, a nice product.

Bottle courtesy of csbosox: Deep, dark brown with ruby highlights when held to light. Has a small, thick, creamy tan head. Nice aroma - lots of roasted malt, roasty chocolate, mild coffee, mild hops, and a hint of sweet fruit. Medium-lively carbonation, full mouthfeel, coats the tongue and teeth. Taste is sweet then bitter roasted malt, burnt chocolate, mild coffee, a hint of bread, and a little bit of floral/pine hops flavors. Finishes with bitter roasted malt and chalk, then gets sweet later on with notes of roasted malt and fruity hops. I like the little bit of extra hops in this - nicely balanced with the roasted malt.

Six pack from a friend; not on the site. Nice dark brown under a tan head. Little thin, but nice roasty flavor with a good bitter/dry finish. Solid beer.

(12 oz bottle: Obtained in trade with robanion, thanks Ray!) The nose is pretty light in general, tough to rouse from slumber. Vigorous swirl of the beer reveals an aroma that is mildly roast, a bit hoppy, but also a bit of soap creaps in there. In the flavor, roastiness is probably about average as porters go. It’s lightly sweet, and fairly hoppy for a moderate level of bitterness that seems to dominate a bit too much. I’ll rate the body as medium "plus". The well-carbonated mouthfeel prevents the tingled tongue from fully appreciating the flavors until after the carbonation has subsided a bit. Very deep, dark ruddy brown, darker than mahogany, but not black either, so there is a slight translucence. Large, light tan head is rocky and creamy on top, but the top layer sits upon mostly large bubbles, so the head recedes to a thin, yet complete layer. Lacing is outstanding, however, fully coating the glass in a moth-eaten afghan. Overall, I think the hops dominates the roasted malts, so with less hops, I might enjoy this one more. Decent, but not wowing me.

pours a slightly see through black with a light brown head. aroma is light chocolate. taste is fruity with an almost barley wine quality. too damn sweet for me. the fruit notes dominate the chocolate flavor. the sweet fruit really detracts from this. i’ve had better.

Bottle. Medium roasted malt, light smoke, caramel, and grapey. Tastes too much like a grapey Dr. Pepper to take this one seriously.

Bottle (Best by 4/29/05). Appearance: Thick, lingering foamy, creamy tan head. Dark brown body. Excellent carbonation. EXCELLENT lacing (I’m using a plastic cup and it’s sticking EXTREMELY well) VERY fizzy. Aroma: Hard to discern. Nuts, coffee, non-refined sugar. Flavor: grassy hop, roasted coffee malt, bitter kick, sorghum, mild barley aftertaste. Palate: goes down smooth. Thick mouthfeel. Lingering mild sweetness, almost a lactic sweetness. Slight stickiness. Light bitterness. Overall, this one gets bonus points for the appearance...
