Boutip (1761), Gatineau, Quebec, Canada Jun 24, 2008 Bottle courtesy of the ever generous Hogtownharry: Poured a clear copper color ale with a huge foamy head with good retention and good lacing. Aroma consists of dominant citrus and floral hops with a distinctive touch of grapefruit all of which constitute a near perfect aroma. Taste is a mix between some citrus and grapefruit hops with a light floral malt backbone. Bitterness is not a dominant element and I somewhat enjoy the fact that a IIPA can be something else that a bitter bomb. Average body with good carbonation and no discernable alcohol. I really enjoyed the presence of grapefruit notes and the attenuation of the bitterness. This beer really makes me want to further discover the beer form this fine brewery.
steview (746), Oceanside, California, USA Aug 28, 2008 quite a creamy version of the style--and it looks almost like a quad, with such a nice and rocky tan head; pine, tropical fruits and peels, smooth malt backing with sharp hops gives an interesting paradox for an interesting beer that is both calm and sweet, and intense and bitter--good balance, and ironically, wish it had less IBUs. mjg74 (1772), La Mesa, California, USA Aug 28, 2008 Bottled from Bev4Less. Dark hazy amber color upon pouring. Sweet aroma with some citric hoppiness. Somewhat fruity. Fairly spicy hoppiness. Balanced with some sweetness and malts. A little richer and more roasty than your standard SoCal IPA. Odeed (1480), Bakersfield, California, USA Aug 27, 2008 (BATCH NUMBER D8121 BY WAY OF PEPSICAN)rusty red in color with a lumpy foamy white head.aroma is pine and citrus hops, caramel malts, and fairly heavy oxidation.flavor is ice tea, caramel malts, and pine/citrus hops.the oxidation is not as upfront in the flavor.pretty good but if ya got one drink it sooner than later. marchcow (485), Coralville, Iowa, USA Aug 25, 2008 Bottle from HyVee in Coralville. Meaty hops aroma with floral and citrus. Slight caramel aromas. rich thick head with dark orange semi-transparent body. Flavor is strong hops, some woody smokiness and a little salt. Malt is lightly evident. Nicely balanced between sweet and dry with an almost chocolaty flavor on the finish. I really like the flavors overall as they appeal to my particuliar tastes, with a good lingering finish. Palate is solid without being too heavy. Very good. Pawola22 (71), Kansas City, Missouri, USA Aug 24, 2008 750 ml bottle from Lukas Liquor Superstore.
Pours a very hazy reddish auburn with a big, creamy, foamy off-white head. It sticks around forever and leaves a nice lacing. Lots of aroma. Sweet caramel malts with lots of citrus hop smells. Some orange along with a peachyness. Just a hint of alcohol smell. Flavor is very sweet and citrusy. The alcohol hint resembles a liqorice flavor. Medium bodied. Finishes dry with a lingering bitterness that is not overpowering whatsoever. Very nice. Warming on the way down. Overall, not the hoppiest double IPA, but a very nice change of pace from the bigger IPAs I’m used to. It reminds me more of a Belgian style IPA in that its complexity lies in more than just the hops.
