Commercial Description:
No. 7 in the Boulevard Smokestack Series. Imperial stouts, like india pale ales, were originally brewed high in alcohol and hops to withstand the rigors of a long sea journey, in this case not to India but to Imperial Russia and the Baltic States. Our version is an over-the-top riff on the style, with a huge grain bill featuring several kinds of malted barley, plus wheat, rye, oats and spelt. Hopping is equally expansive, balancing the body of the beer with a very respectable 55 IBUs. Approximately 10% of the batch was barrel-aged for four months, then blended with fresh beer before bottling. Za Vas!

Bottle #5753 of 11960. Appearance: Pours a dark brown, near black body with a tall, foamy, tan-colored head. Smell: Huge, rich roasted malt aroma jam-packed with acute notes of chocolate, mocha, blackstrap molasses, and aniseed side by side with a scent of fresh-baked nine-grain bread. Taste: Tempting tastes of dark, roasted malts, full of dark chocolate sauce, molasses, Java ’Dutch Estate’ Coffee, anise, and caramel with a moderate amount of sweetness to attend to. Slight smoky, charred grain character and hint of wood-fired oats. Thin vein of dark fruitiness lurking within. Bold mix of roasty, resiny bitterness, though it falls a tad short of balancing the sweetness. Touch of warming alcohol (though comparatively light considering the ABV percentage) on the sweetish, highly roasty finish. Mouthfeel: Medium-full body. Medium carbonation. Fairly smooth mouthfeel. Drinkability: A top-notch, surprisingly drinkable Imperial Stout and my favorite of the Smokestake Series thus far. Nice work, Boulevard.

750ml bottle from matt.....pours close to black with a huge light brown head.... aroma of some chocolate with earthy undertones with some sort of earthy, yeastiness..... flavors of sweet chocolate, charred and roasty malt with a roasty lingering sweet finish and a light fruitiness that evolves. mild carbonation and softer mouthfeel. nice and drinkable for an 11% impy stout.

Bottle. Head is initially large, frothy/creamy, brown, fully lasting. Body is nearly opaque black (flashlight tested), bottle conditioned. Aroma is moderately to heavily malty (roasted grain/coffee, chocolate, toasted nuts), lightly hoppy (apricot), with notes of vanilla, cassis, anise, earth, wood. Flavor is moderately to heavily sweet, lightly acidic, lightly to moderately bitter. Finish is lightly to moderately sweet, lightly acidic, moderately to heavily bitter. Medium to full body, creamy/velvety texture, lively carbonation, moderately alcoholic. One of the best new (to me) Impy Stouts I’ve had in awhile. Mild berry-like/yeasty tartness gives it an almost Belgian slant, and every aspect is solid...awesome large/lasting head, luxurious mouthfeel, excellent flavor balance, warming but non-aggressive alcohol, and a very enticing aroma.

Black as pitch with a huge, brown foam. Aroma of tobacco, cigar smoke, spice and soy sauce. Salt, dark fruit, chocolate and peanut are all evident but the beer is fizzy and a tad thin. This beer should improve markedly with age.

Pours a depp opaque brown with t hin tan head. Aroma predominantly of alcohol with an undertone of sweetness. I get a metallic taste which is followed by a surprising amount of carbonation. Pretty good but not great to me.

Pours an opaque black with dark mahogany edges and a large, frothy clingy-lacing light brown head. Aroma of sweet dark caramel and chocolate with some smoky character. Starts with an oily rich caramely sweetness and some milk chocolate complexity along with a touch of light fruitiness. Finishes bittersweet, smooth and creamy with some lingering chocolate and roasty character. A nice imperial stout.
