Commercial Description:
No. 7 in the Boulevard Smokestack Series. Imperial stouts, like india pale ales, were originally brewed high in alcohol and hops to withstand the rigors of a long sea journey, in this case not to India but to Imperial Russia and the Baltic States. Our version is an over-the-top riff on the style, with a huge grain bill featuring several kinds of malted barley, plus wheat, rye, oats and spelt. Hopping is equally expansive, balancing the body of the beer with a very respectable 55 IBUs. Approximately 10% of the batch was barrel-aged for four months, then blended with fresh beer before bottling. Za Vas!

Sweet lactose aromas. Some citrus, dried fruits, rye bread, and fruit cake, Very thick brown head of long duration and a very dark brownish black body. Sticks to the glass. Flavors are initially similiar to the aromas. Sweet with a sour milky and cream flavor, Coffee and chocolate start to come through, as does the hops. Good long duration with some sweet sugars, milky sourness, and bitter hoppiness blending together. Alcohol is noticeable but not overly aggressive. Barrel aged qualities are subtly noticeable. Mouthfeel is rich and thick. A good sipper. Perhaps a could use some additional smoky qualities. Sweetness is a little too dominant. Nevertheless, a very good beer overall. A good sipper. Bottle number 6758 out of 11960.

Pours with monstrous tan head and has less aroma than one would think. Tastes of sweet roastiness with a bitter black patent kick. Alcohol notes are subtle in the aftertaste and has legitimate body.

Bottle #1115 brought to a tasting by tjthresh, thanks Tom: Opaque with a huge frothy tan head and clinging lace. The aroma is COFFEE!!! Oh there is some chocolate, walnut, smoke, rye, prune, anise, and pepper vapours too. What I do not detect is any barrel aging on the nose. The taste starts with a overdose of big smooth sweet malts with a hats off to chocolate. Charred rye and dark fruits abound. The midsection towards the finish is more of a tribute to the hop in it’s grassy and resiny bitterness. Some coffee and ashy tones upon the finish. The mouth feel is oily and heavy bodied, smooth and lush with a warming characteristic, ashy aftertaste. WOW, what a surprise, this really works when everything you have read makes you wonder how it could.

bottle 6353/11960 shared by nbutler11 at the bockyhorseys...

a brown pour is just a shade off from black. it is momentarily capped by a cocoa colored head which fades an remains as a film. the aroma has a lot of chocolate on top of a bit of bourbon, roasty grain, ash, brown sugar richness and molasses-like bitterness. some barrel bugs slip into the flavor and join up with cocoa, wood, vanilla, tobacco and maple. medium body is a little sugary but ashiness and fizzy carbonation clean it up. 7/4/7/3.5/16/3.75

Bottle shared at tasting. Thanks! Pours black with a tan head. Smell is roasty, thin, and some caramel. Taste is dry chocolate, lightly hoppy, and some lilcorice. Thin and fizzy overall, especially for an 11% Imperial Stout. I was unpleasantly surprised by this one. Not one of their better efforts, but still enjoyable.

Bottle 06423 of 11960 (thanks joet) pours deep, dark brown with bright beige feathery taut head. Chocolately nose leads to dimensional chocolate flavors along with molasses and hop bitterness. Body is oily overall but flavors are prickly in the mouth. Fantastic lacing. Hides huge alcohol warmly.

FRO Throwdown: bottle from beastiefan2k. Dark brown, opaque. Roasty and smoky. A little caramel. A touch rough and roasty, maybe even thin. A fair imperial stout.
