Commercial Description:
No. 7 in the Boulevard Smokestack Series. Imperial stouts, like india pale ales, were originally brewed high in alcohol and hops to withstand the rigors of a long sea journey, in this case not to India but to Imperial Russia and the Baltic States. Our version is an over-the-top riff on the style, with a huge grain bill featuring several kinds of malted barley, plus wheat, rye, oats and spelt. Hopping is equally expansive, balancing the body of the beer with a very respectable 55 IBUs. Approximately 10% of the batch was barrel-aged for four months, then blended with fresh beer before bottling. Za Vas!

Bottle courtesy of siebenmorgan. Pours a murky pitch black color with a thin tan head. Aroma is roasted and malty with notes of chocolate, ripe dark fruit, sweet cherries, some hints of caramel, coffee, and honey. Flavor is roasted and malty with notes of funky overripe fruit, chocolate, yeast, dark ripe fruit, molasses. Generally medium body with a malty and sweet finish. This one may need to age a little while to be truly superb.

courtesy of kiefdog. pours black with beige head. Aroma of dark fruits, noticeable by some cherry. Taste is lightly tart with notes of dark fruits with an overpowering cherry mouthfeel. Interesting approach to the style with cherry tartness.

Amber-accented dark brown. Nice big head. The aroma is of cheap coffee with some alcohol and light nuts. Creamy body. Some dark roast/toast notes. Overall, though, this is a pretty standard issue impy that fails to make any particular impression.

Bottle, courtesy kiefdog. Pitch black pour, dark tan head and wet lacing. Nose has some fruits, notably pear, and slight roast. Flavor has some dry yeasty elements, Belgiany I’d say, with a slight tart, slight roast, and a metallic tinge. Well this is average. Dry, interesting, but ultimately disappointing.

I’ve enjoyed most all of the Smokestack series beers, so I was anxious to try the newest release. Pours pitch black with a very thick, slowly dissolving tan head. It’s a nice looking pour. Aroma is roast with bits of coffee and also some small hints of yeast. The first thing I noticed upon sipping was the thick, smooth mouthfeel of this beer. Flavor is predominately roasted malts with strong coffee notes and oak. Also has some dark fruit sweetness mixed in. Nice complexity. Another nice offering in the Smokestack series.

Bottle shared by Daknole. Black with thick tan head and lots of lacing. Coffee, pleasant asphalt, and dark chocolate aromas. Creamy mouthfeel. Nice rich roasted black coffee with cherry-like acidity. Solid and great.

My wife looks over at me and says, it’s good.... like, really good. She’s pretty picky, so this is a good sign. Poured into a snifter a deep black color, followed by a big tight tan head that shows plenty of retention and leaves just a touch of lace. Aroma is complex but sort of faint, it’s one of those where you really gotta get your nose in there, I dig a really aromatic beer so that is sort of a problem for me, but what you find in this aroma once you search it out is immediately nuttiness and roastiness, this gives way to vanilla, mildly metallic notes some sweat and a nice floral hop bouquet. Flavor is bitter and hoppy in a manor that reminds me of the Double Wide IPA, I would wager that the hop bill may be similar but I’ve been wrong before. Flavor profile includes woodiness, roastiness, a little vanilla sweetness, some sharp metallic flavors, some cola right on the front of the tongue, some raison, and a little bourbon. The palate is sharp but very full, and there is not a trace of alcohol in the palate nor in the flavor. Very well done.
