Commercial Description:
No. 7 in the Boulevard Smokestack Series. Imperial stouts, like india pale ales, were originally brewed high in alcohol and hops to withstand the rigors of a long sea journey, in this case not to India but to Imperial Russia and the Baltic States. Our version is an over-the-top riff on the style, with a huge grain bill featuring several kinds of malted barley, plus wheat, rye, oats and spelt. Hopping is equally expansive, balancing the body of the beer with a very respectable 55 IBUs. Approximately 10% of the batch was barrel-aged for four months, then blended with fresh beer before bottling. Za Vas!

Bottle shared by Daknole. Black with thick tan head and lots of lacing. Coffee, pleasant asphalt, and dark chocolate aromas. Creamy mouthfeel. Nice rich roasted black coffee with cherry-like acidity. Solid and great.

My wife looks over at me and says, it’s good.... like, really good. She’s pretty picky, so this is a good sign. Poured into a snifter a deep black color, followed by a big tight tan head that shows plenty of retention and leaves just a touch of lace. Aroma is complex but sort of faint, it’s one of those where you really gotta get your nose in there, I dig a really aromatic beer so that is sort of a problem for me, but what you find in this aroma once you search it out is immediately nuttiness and roastiness, this gives way to vanilla, mildly metallic notes some sweat and a nice floral hop bouquet. Flavor is bitter and hoppy in a manor that reminds me of the Double Wide IPA, I would wager that the hop bill may be similar but I’ve been wrong before. Flavor profile includes woodiness, roastiness, a little vanilla sweetness, some sharp metallic flavors, some cola right on the front of the tongue, some raison, and a little bourbon. The palate is sharp but very full, and there is not a trace of alcohol in the palate nor in the flavor. Very well done.

Bottle from South Bay Drugs and Liquor. Aroma is a deep olfaction of dark black chocolate and roasted down malt. Creates a violent abruption of head and a pitch black oil color. The flavor is heavily induced with chocolate and coffee flavors both rich and strong.

Smoke stack black and chocolate body with a huge dollop of chocolate cream head. Smoky chocolate roasted aroma. Flavor is likewise characterized mostly by smokey and roast barley with some hints of dark chocolate. Black patent dryness through the finish. Some ethyl and estery notes also enter the mix upon aeration.

750. Thanks, BVC and probably Theisti. Jet black. Dense, creamy, long-lived burnt tan head. Big pruney vanilla nose. Creamy body on the high side of medium. Campfire, bacon, chocolate, coffee, dark pitted tree fruit, and vanilla on the mid-palate. Long smoky chocolate and fruit finish. Awesome beer.

750 ml bottle from bev4less. Bottle 5827/11960. Pours an opaque black color with a big tan head that has great retention. The aroma is moderate with wood, molasses, anise and a little coffee. The taste is very rich with coffee, dark fruits, biter walnuts and roasted malts. The mouthfeel is a bit thin, but it does build to a pasty finale. Also, the mouthfeel comes across as a bit acidic. The finish is medium in duration with lingering acidic coffee. Overall: A very interesting RIS, not my favorite, but still quite good.

Sampled at the Bockyhorsey tasting, Not the typical aroma for an Impy Stout somewhatt musty grain bin. Black body with tan head. Flavor had a roasty coco to it but that was about it. Dry not rich bodied like most.
