Commercial Description:
No. 7 in the Boulevard Smokestack Series. Imperial stouts, like india pale ales, were originally brewed high in alcohol and hops to withstand the rigors of a long sea journey, in this case not to India but to Imperial Russia and the Baltic States. Our version is an over-the-top riff on the style, with a huge grain bill featuring several kinds of malted barley, plus wheat, rye, oats and spelt. Hopping is equally expansive, balancing the body of the beer with a very respectable 55 IBUs. Approximately 10% of the batch was barrel-aged for four months, then blended with fresh beer before bottling. Za Vas!

Pours with a black body topped by a thick head with a good amount of lacing left on the glass. It’s sweet and malty with nice chocolate notes and a little bitterness as well as some roast and alcohol. Full bodied, warming and well carbonated.

Sampled at the ’09 RBPTE, courtesy of MrChopin. Heavy malt nose with chocolate, coffee, and roasted grain. A bit boozy with port, wood, smoke, and vanilla. Light hops with a bit of resinous character. Black clear body with a frothy dark lacing head. Full bodied, thick and alcoholic, with medium carbonation and a light chalky finish. Big sweetness here, rich with chocolate, roasted malt, a bit of smoke and coffee, and long lasting taste. Mild bitter finish and sweetish after.

(Bottle) Pours black with a creamy brown head. The aroma is medium roasted with tones of cocoa, chocolate, tar, asphalt, light coffee and dark caramel. Undertones of buttery oak, molasses and resinous/citric hops. Cassis, green apples and blackberry hints. A touch of sourish lacto. Maybe some smoke. The flavour is well balanced - light sweet, near medium bitter and light acidic. Tones of asphalt, cocoa, coffee, wood and dark fruits/berries. The mouthfeel is round, light oily and light tart with a light to medium carbonation. Aftertaste of berries, roasted malt and acidic resiny/citric hops. Near full-bodied. Nice beer!

Thanks to my brother for sharing his 750 ml bottle. Pours black with a thick pillowy tan head. Aroma is roasted chocolate malts, lots of coffee, licorice a nice bit of hoppiness persists along with just a slight metallic note. Flavor is sharp and bitter from start to finish. Lots of dark fruit and a surprising amount of citric hops. Woody and coffee more in the finish which is crisp and fairly quick with a lot of roasted malt dryness. Medium to full body and a fairly sharp carbonation. Not my favorite IS but still tasty and warming.

Bottled. A pitch black beer with a thick dark brown head. The aroma is very roasted with strong notes of citrusy/grapefruit hoppy notes. The flavor is sweet with notes of roasted malt wood, coffee, dark bitter chocolate, and wood, leading to a bitter, roasted finish.
