Commercial Description:
No. 7 in the Boulevard Smokestack Series. Imperial stouts, like india pale ales, were originally brewed high in alcohol and hops to withstand the rigors of a long sea journey, in this case not to India but to Imperial Russia and the Baltic States. Our version is an over-the-top riff on the style, with a huge grain bill featuring several kinds of malted barley, plus wheat, rye, oats and spelt. Hopping is equally expansive, balancing the body of the beer with a very respectable 55 IBUs. Approximately 10% of the batch was barrel-aged for four months, then blended with fresh beer before bottling. Za Vas!

Nose very vinious and boozy and not reminscent of an imperial stout. But not bad either..some yeasty phenols and roasted malts show through as well. Dark beer with beautiful head. Vinious & smooth mouth and flavors with significant but not overdone bitterness. No mindblowing going on here, but solid nonetheless.

Black body with a huge head, probably the largest head I’ve ever encountered for the style. Nice aroma of cocoa, licorice, plum, oatmeal, vanilla, and coffee. This is lovely. Rich and decadent. Many times recently, this style has grown thin and old on me. However, when I have a good one like this, it’ what brings me back to loving imperial stouts. Excellent!

Bottle No. 06166 of 11960. My family was really taken by this. It seemed a bit high on the alcohol but I didn’t appreciate that it was barrel-aged--I can see where that’s coming into the flavor profile. It’s so rich, with a lovely blend of roast and chocolate and fruit, a touch of hops but not over the top. Dark lace head, great body, wonderful palate. I should have bought more of these.

Bottle. A real sleeper as far as Im concerned. Pour is black with tan head. Aroma is roasted malt, sweetness, tobacco, coffee, and dark chocolate. Flavor is velvety, great and true to nose with a hint of blackberry or currants in there. Finish is very smooth and creamy with coffee and chocolate notes. Really exceeded my expectations.

bottle 10699 thanks to bman1113vr. i hope the fact that i was a little tipsy by the time i got to this one doesnt contribute to the high score. poured black with a beautiful tan head and some great legs. aroma of chocolate, dark roasts, and alcohol. flavor was right on with the nose. mouthfeel was slick and velvety with low carbonation. it was almost like running velvet panties over my tongue. great beer, must go buy some.
