Commercial Description:
No. 7 in the Boulevard Smokestack Series. Imperial stouts, like india pale ales, were originally brewed high in alcohol and hops to withstand the rigors of a long sea journey, in this case not to India but to Imperial Russia and the Baltic States. Our version is an over-the-top riff on the style, with a huge grain bill featuring several kinds of malted barley, plus wheat, rye, oats and spelt. Hopping is equally expansive, balancing the body of the beer with a very respectable 55 IBUs. Approximately 10% of the batch was barrel-aged for four months, then blended with fresh beer before bottling. Za Vas!

Source: 750 mL bottle purchased from Kelleher’s Irish Pub in Peoria.
Glass: Poured into a snifter.
Appearance: Poured a deep black color with a two finger brown head.
Aroma: Roasted malt with dark chocolate notes, along with a faint hint of vanilla.
Flavor: Roasted malt and chocolate, with hints of vanilla and dark fruits. Chocolate dominant though.
Palate: Medium/full body with soft carbonation and a creamy mouthfeel.
Overall: Pretty good, but doesn’t rank in my Top 10 Imperial Stouts.

Reminds me of barley wine; has a brown sugar and raisin aroma profile and is full-bodied, slick, sweet, and sugary. Coffee, chocolate, and roasted grains are present with wonderful dexterity. Also sports a ridiculous head of foam that is rich and lathery. Worthy of admiration.

Bottle courtesy of maximum12 poured into a snifter. Pours pitch black in the glass with a massive tan head, at least three inches to start. The head recedes to a big cap with lots of bubbles feeding it throughout. The lacing is excellent as well - great looking stout here. The aroma is dominated by the dark roasted malts with plenty of dark chocolate sweetness as well. There is also hints of vanilla, caramel and licorice as it warms in addition to a little bit of dark fruits. The barrel presence comes out just a little but not much. The taste has the huge chocolate malt sweetness right up front with more dark fruit than the aroma, definitely some raisins and figs. The finish is very roasted with a combination of the cocoa, toasted grains and finally the slight burn from alcohol on the way down. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with tons of carbonation and a bit of a dry finish. This is another excellent beer from Boulevard, who I’ve been impressed with in general. It’s a big malty, chocolaty take on the style and remains very drinkable despite the size.

Black color. Very low carbonation. Lots of roasted grain and malt. A little sugar, and light, but noticeable hops. Thick palate. Above average.

Bottle shared at local BA gathering. Poured a clear dark brown color with a moderate frothy brown head that mostly lasted with good lacing. Moderate roast coffee, caramel and alcohol aroma. Medium body with a smooth texture and flat carbonation. Medium to heavy roasted sweet flavor with a medium to heavy bittersweet finish of moderate to long duration. Another standout smooth brew.

Bottle #658 thanks to Kan. Almost opaque black with large, long lasting burnt brown head with that beautiful red tint. Sweeter aroma with fruit, coffee, dark, roasted matl, nice. Sweet fruit flavor, coffee, biitter hops, alc, big roasted malt, solid. Medium to full body with big creamyiness. Very nice, one of the best of the night.
