Commercial Description:
No. 7 in the Boulevard Smokestack Series. Imperial stouts, like india pale ales, were originally brewed high in alcohol and hops to withstand the rigors of a long sea journey, in this case not to India but to Imperial Russia and the Baltic States. Our version is an over-the-top riff on the style, with a huge grain bill featuring several kinds of malted barley, plus wheat, rye, oats and spelt. Hopping is equally expansive, balancing the body of the beer with a very respectable 55 IBUs. Approximately 10% of the batch was barrel-aged for four months, then blended with fresh beer before bottling. Za Vas!

Pours dark and dense, almost black in color, with a foamy, bubbly, light brown head. A thick wash of suds leaves minimal spotting behind on the glass. The nose is straightforward, rich, and inviting. Notes of dark chocolate fudge, burnt caramel, and oaky vanilla are all featured prominently, with an underlying roasty graininess that compliments nicely. Flavors follow suit, roasty, smooth, and massively chocolaty. Big bodied and slick up front, with moderate to light carbonation, the finish transitions to full-on creamy. The alcohol remains subdued throughout, quite the feat for an 11% ABV beer. Very nice RIS. I’d love to see a bourbon barrel aged version of this.

Admittedly not the first beer back from Lent, but it was the second. And it was taslty. I’m a little salty writing... 40 days/nights, you know... Never-the-less, strong in aroma and flavor; any way you slice it. Coffee and chocolate and fruit highlights and hop kick rearness all the way through. This was a robust beer with handshake appeal and back porch presence. Delicious and advanced for a Boulevard.

750 ml bottle courtesy of a trade with beastiefan2k. Pours a dense black with a large brown head that lasted almost until the end and left a full layer of foam with each sip. Very pleasant aroma of roasted malt, chocolate, some mild wood smokiness, raisins, and a bit of alcohol. The flavor falls back from the aroma just a bit. There is a strong flavor of roasted malt, and the grain flavor remains strong throughout. The chocolate is present but is less noticeable, and the smokiness and the fruit are nowhere to be seen. There is a somewhat strong alcohol burn in the back of the throat towards the finish, which lingers for a few seconds beyond the swallow. Medium bitterness at the finish as well. Full bodied.

Black pour, thick persistent light tan head. Mild smoke on aroma, roast, tobacco, mild alcohol, all blend nicely on the nose. Nice taste – bunch of roast, the alcohol isn’t too aggressive. A nice imperial – doesn’t get too brash.

750 ml bottle. Thanks to Phillybeer for sharing! Pour- nice deep coal-black with a nice almost orange reflective tan head and some lace. Aroma is on the hoppy side for an impy stout, tons of big black roasted barley, good coffee, and chocolate as well with hints of raisin, and plum and licorice. Flavor is licorice, tobacco, green and minty hops, deep dark charred and burnt malts, roast, dark chocolate and a green bitter hoppy finish- slight acrid and burnt character in the end with still a massive body to hold up to this 11%. Big and very well made. nice.
